    Sales taxes & Ownership

If you own and use your boat outside of Florida for more than 6 months then you owe no sales/use tax to Florida when you bring it here. That is true regardless of what taxes you may, or may not, have paid when you bought it. Only caveat is that the 6 months must have been spent in a state or...

    Sales taxes & Ownership

Georgia law requires you to register your boat in the state, and pay appropriate sales tax, if you keep your boat in Georgia for more than 60 days. Of course, this is one of those laws that is very often not strictly enforced, and therefore easy to get around or overlook.

applying for a loan myself or thru broker?

You are confusing people who APPEAR to be well off with people who are ACTUALLY well off. You should read the book "The Millionaire Next Door." You probably wouldn't like it (because it would force you to consider uncomfortable truths), but in the long run -- if you read it with an open mind --...

Thoughts on leasing out my trawler for Loopers

See, that's a problem, too. Someone who does not live in your immediate area is not going to be too thrilled about closing up their house, getting all their affairs in order, and traveling to where you are -- all with the intent of living on a boat for the next several months -- but with all of...

    What prop direction ?

Given the cost of a new prop, I would want to be absolutely, 100% sure. So, I would put it in gear, turn the engine over once or twice, and see what direction the shaft rotates.

Cuba - Gardens of the Queens

Are you a U.S. citizen? If so, then you are only legally allowed to visit Cuba if you get prior authorization. Such prior authorization will only be granted if your trip falls into one of 12 approved categories. Of course, the reality is that a lot of Americans visit Cuba without the proper...

    Newly installed used paravanes failed.

Obviously you over-stressed that pole beyond its limit. I have to wonder if you were going too fast at the time. If I recall my physics correctly (which is no sure thing) then the force on the pole should go up with the square of the velocity. That is, double your speed and you quadruple the...

    Shipyard Drama - Advice Appreciated

All the talk about maybe there was extra work, maybe the boat was dirty, there are always two sides... That's all BS! He said in the first post that the estimate specifically said that if it was going to cost more they would call. They did not call. They did not notify him. They did not...

    L.l.c.?

You see a lot of people who insist that having a license means you will be held to a higher standard, even when you are not operating under the authority of that license. I have done a lot of searching on this question. I have never -- NEVER! -- found even one, single case of this happening to...

Spiders - how to safely rid a boat of spiders

Spiders eat insects. If you have a lot of spiders it is because you have a lot of insects. Take care of the insect problem and the spider problem will take care of itself. That said, dryer sheets do work to repel spiders.

How to anchor for a week?

There are lots of ways to keep a boat relatively cool. Shading as much of the deck as you can helps tremendously. Then you can use fans and wind scoops to move air through the boat. At some point, though (especially here in Florida), you just need to crank up the air conditioner. If you're...

    Posting with Voice Recognition Software

I admit that I have a relatively low tolerance for that sort of thing. Not that my own posts are perfect, but I do try. Once I hit my threshold, I just skip on to the next post. It amazes me that so many people seem to think that the WRITER has no obligation to make their post decipherable, but...

What should my hull speed be?

Your theoretical hull speed (and remember, it is just "theoretical") is a bit under 8.8 knots. So 8 knots should be a reasonable cruising speed. Of course, slower will be more economical. The displacement of your boat has no bearing on its theoretical hull speed. What the displacement DOES...

Compost Head - my take on Natures Head after a month

True for pooping, also. That's what makes the federal marine sanitation laws so bizarre. You can stand on your swim platform and pee or poop directly into the water, and you violate none of the marine sanitation laws. You may be violating OTHER laws, of course (public decency, for instance)...

    Surveyor’s Tale & Boatyard Etiquette

Rules of conduct? Rules of attire, maybe. Other than what you considered an inappropriate appearance, did the sea trial skipper conduct himself in any inappropriate way? Doesn't sound like it. We tend to be pretty casual about attire, here in Florida. I'll grant you that letting your junk hang...

    Air Compressor Recommendation

Actually, there are some very quiet oil free compressors available nowadays. I own one from California Air Tools. It does not make any more noise when it is running than my 2021 Toyota Camry makes when idling.

For marinas in FL, what is a Liveaboard?

Of course, as you noted, the rules vary from marina to marina. In general, though, most marinas seem to allow you to stay overnight 8 or 10 nights per month. That is even those who don't allow liveaboards, or who charge extra for liveaboards. At least, that is what I have found in the Tampa...

    Documentation

If, somewhere in the literature, they actually said that they are an official government agency then, yes, that would be illegal. They don't, however. So what they are doing is completely legal. Of course, it is obvious that they hope that you won't look at it too closely, and will THINK that...

    Cellular Booster

You do not have to get the permission of your cellular provider. As mentioned, though, they will not get you a signal where there is NONE. They will only improve the signal where it is weak. Good luck.

    Scam Letter

Exactly. They are very clearly trying to fool people into thinking that they have received an official letter from the government. That makes it 100% a scam! It just confounds me how anyone can defend such a practice.

    Hydrogen diesel injection?

This ^^^^^^ And this ^^^^^^ It is amazing to me how many people desperately want to believe in the impossible. People constantly talk these days about how we need to "follow the science," and yet, so very few people have even the least concept of what "the science" really tells us. It would...

Do I Really Need an FCC License for VHF Use in Canada?

It really kind of amazes me how often we get these questions that amount to, "Do I really have to obey the law?"

    Intercoms?

The traditional method, used on boats for centuries. As recently as 35 years ago, you could still find this method of communication on U.S. Navy vessels.

    I hate stainless

One big problem with stainless is previous owners who thought it was a good idea to use steel wool to remove the staining, but did not seek out and pay the price for STAINLESS steel wool. That just makes the problem worse and worse, as time goes on.
