Those things do have a 'proper' name although my detailer just calls them 'dogbones'. Mine have relatively small radius on the corners, with the slope matching rails, forward window etc.
I'll try and search for the name - I saw it on a thread on boatdesign.net a few years ago where some NA's were discussing them.

I'm having trouble finding the term. Coincidentally it was bugging me a couple of weeks ago. It does seem that 'pilaster' can be used. eg by Fleming
