Regarding fuel cost in this cool old tug:
Over the last few days there has been a love fest going on over on another thread over a Fleming or something like it.

So a used Fleming in this length lists for $3,750,000 In Stuart Florida today and it sells with 820 horsepower aboard.
This boat sells for 250K with 675 horsepower aboard it.
Why are we panicking??
If you put down 500K for this old tug, you would have the boat (250K)and all the fuel(250K buys 60,000 gallons) it could use for the next ten years, so cruising fuel would be free from the day of purchase. That is ten fills and would cover around 50,000 nautical miles which almost no one on this forum will cover in the next ten years in any vessel.
Perspective people!:rofl: This is good cheap fun right here.


I must of left the $500k you speak of in my other pair of pants!

Looking at the ad photo's, they had me until they showed all the carpet/fuzz covered bulkheads in the living spaces below decks. . . . Does anyone really find that attractive?!?

Is it so expensive in US ?

If you start with no deep cycle bank, solar panels, or inverter and you plan to stay on the hook with a 65' boat where there are lots of cloudy days, I could see $8K in equipment before you factor in the install cost.

We could do it ourselves also. $8K was a starting point. You could invest a lot more with a big lithium bank and substantially more panels.

we already fitted 1.5 kw on our trawler and 15 kw on house.
It is why I am surprised by the price you said.
One of my friend built some catamaran and he put : solar panel, lithium, regulator/inverter/charger and small "fisher Panda 5i".
The most expensive part are : Panda. around 7000€
In day time solar panel charge normally enough and in case of necessity the Panda start .
May be on our actual boat (if not sold before :) ) we will remove our 17kw (just keep the 9kw) put bigger batteries (actually only 800ah/24volt) and a "small" generator.
Anyone use this type of installation ?

I have lusted after this boat for years, she is in beautiful condition.. just look at the ER pics. She is finished out in a pretty utilitarian style, but she is a beauty sitting at the dock. I was in Pt Ludlow last summer when she came in, her skipper did a fantastic and very professional docking . Compaired to my previous SeaRay she would be cheap to run. She looks like she could have been a decent research vessel in a former life.

Not sure I'd want a boat older than I am knowing how I've declined in the past 10 years! lol. There is an attraction to a boat like this, but I expect you'd need deep pockets once you take ownership.

Think a significant amount of the choice depends on how the boat is outfitted, your tolerance for roll at anchor, how much work on systems you can do, and what part of Caribbean. Imo, the Willard is small inside for its size. The remaining 3 will depend more on how they have been maintained and upgraded.

Mr. Kp. As I mentioned in another post, you'd be best to go on board the models you mention above. First hand direct experience is FAR superior to either pictures on YW or the opinions of anonymous TF members.

I think every broker uses a wide angle lens when taking pics. I think it is a bit unfair.

But in the meantime,(not new to boating but liveaboards yes) I'll get my captain's license, take a few 1 week courses in diesel engines and whatever courses on the various systems in South Fla. Also will go to the Trawler show in Stuart, Fla in March, have a look, listen in on some seminars... That's a start

Good luck KP. Just keep in mind that the buying process will take longer than you likely imagine. It's not just the current market I'm talking about. Finding the right boat often means looking at a number of duds first. There could be travel involved of 1 or more trips per boat. Then when you make a decision and negotiate a price, there is still work to do. Point I am trying to make is that if you want to purchase in 18 mos, don't wait too long to start looking. 18 mos is not that long to find and then buy the boat you want.

Now here is some 2 stroke Detroit Diesel porn. The 6-110 was short lived, made obsolete by the higher speed 8V71 that made more horsepower in a smaller package. It came in two flavors, one with a centrifugal blower that had a low whistling sound, and the second with a roots blower, that had the familiar DD bark.

The centrifugal blower 6-110 was my favorite DD 2 stroke due to its gentle whistling sound. In my youth I worked around (not on) a tug on the Arrow lakes with a 220 hp centrifugal version, and on another with the roots blower. This Bill Garden designed boat appears to have the centrifugal version.

Glad to see they finally added some more pics to that ad. Neat boats with a lot of room squeezed into their frame. There’s another one for sale in Alaska, but repowered sometime in her past with a John Deere.

With the exceptionally tall [might I say "overboard" - lol] "perceived" $$$ value placed on unfinished-restoration older boats these days... we could purchase some oldies, place a 3 person labor crew aboard for couple weeks applying lipstick galore; then resell for 10X our two months ago cost! Oh yea... must remember to have portable genset in the deal. Harbor Freight Tools sells Predator generators for way under a grand! :speed boat:

A small 2k water cooled generator would do the trick but maybe $2k

I was being sarcastic re using Harbor Freight's Predator generator... on a boat. They are heavy, powerful air cooled gen sets. Tough as can be. I use em on construction projects and one is set up to run my house when/if required.

But you missed the point that it's "vrtually brand new"! lol

Sounds like someone bailed partway through the restoration.

Am I the only one who thinks the position of the rudder stock is awfully far forward for the size of the rudder AFT of the pivot point?

No double berths. All business. I imagine she'd do okay on fuel at 8kts but can cruise with moderate efficiency at slow planing speeds. 1100g would mean good range.

You could also invest a lot less with a big LFP bank and more panels........if you do some homework.

Victron 712 battery monitor....$200
840ah @ 24v lifepo4 ....... $4000
Total $8560 AUD
= $6182 USD

To get a pro to wire it up initialy cost about $1000 and that included extra pumps in ER and 240v lighting in ER and coldroom.
