Thanks for your attention
Here is a photo of a similar ammeter from the fly deck instruments panel. The faulty one is on the saloon instruments panel but covered by a wooden plate level to the top of the transparent part of the instrument. This is why current VDO ammeters are unsuited.

So the panel face was cut large enough to fit over the finish ring. If you remove the gauge, the outer black finish ring should be removable and the actual gauge unit should be interchangeable.
I will still check for a matching one. Will take a couple days.
Thanks Turtle Blue
You’re right ! The black outer ring is removeable but the replacement instrument itself must have edge tenons to hold the ring. Therefore I keep relying on this old model
Anyway, I’ll try to have my ammeter repaired by an automobile electrician.
Best wishes

Personally I would not replace it with another one like the original but rather get a current technology amp gauge. It may not match but it will give you way more information than an old school ammeter.

Analog style amp gauges have pretty much gone away. I checked what I have from the last couple of change outs and they were all volt meters and white faced.
My choice would be to swap out the one from the upper station if you want to keep everything matching in the finished panel and then find something you like for a replacement, possibly a multi function unit. You can glue the exterior housing in place to minimize the visual difference. Or just keep checking E-Bay.
