Our trawler has a ZF 80-1 transmission and I am preparing to change the ATF fluid. Noticed there is also a transmission filter that screws into the top of the casing with an Allen bolt. How often should I be changing the filter?
Every fluid change?

Thanks everyone

Just found the ZF manual. Actually my wife found it :)
Manual states change filter every time you change fluid.
Now I just need to find the filter.

The ZF " filter" is a cleanable screen. I bought a second one just so I could clean it later but it really is quick & easy task. If you are pumping the bulk of the fluid out the filter housing is a good place to get a large part of it. The drain plug is tough to get much of a pan under it and be able to get it out... at least it was in my case.

Yep, the filter is cleanable. Rinse in some diesel and blow out with compressed air. No need to replace. Usually cap o-ring can be cleaned up and re-used. Note the filter is on the suction side of the pump.
