Dave what happend to your other boat I see you have a new one ?

Well, my mother lived with us. She was 101 years old. With the trawler it wasn’t possible for us to do any traveling with the boat due to the slow speed and having to be able to return in case of an emergency. So we decided to sell the trawler and buy an express cruiser so we could at least do some cruising within a 2 to 3 hour response time. So we put the trawler up for sale and sold it last June. Then we started looking for either a Formula or Tiara cruiser. But then in early July my mom fell and shattered her femur. She had surgery and then went into a skilled nursing facility to rehab. We bought the current Formula in August. She was doing well in rehab until November she caught Covid and passed away several days later. So now I have a new toy to play with. We are in the process of upgrading the Formula to get it the way we like it. We have put on bow and stern thrusters, new Raymarine electronics, an extended swim platform, new carpet in the cabin, SeaDek on all the decks, new bimini and enclosure and new upholstery in the cockpit and helm areas. Then this summer we should be able to actually do some cruising. Thanks for the interest.

So I’ve talked to the Coast Guard in Maryland and Corpus Cristy and they do not regulate Recreational Boats only commercial boats. I also talked to my surveyor and he stated it must meet ABYC requirements ! But is that requirement for multiple tanks to replace one? I also contacted ABYC and the answer is YES you cannot have connections to tie tanks together at the bottom, he said the only way to have multiple tanks replace a larger tank is to use transfer pumps... The pumps would have to have a shutoff to eliminate overfilling of any single tank. More complex but doable .

IT’S THE LAW - USCG:
183.518 Fuel tank openings.
Each opening into the fuel tank must be at or above the topmost surface of the tank.

Don't see where diesel is any different than gas... not that it makes sense....??????

Because Subpart J of section 183 (183.500’s) only applies to gasoline-fueled systems.

(a) This subpart applies to all boats that have gasoline engines, except outboard engines, for electrical generation, mechanical power, or propulsion.

Yes, on diesel tanks you can have fittings and access plates below the top of the tank.
