Show Your First Love (Boats)

I lost my dad last week. Mum died in February and my dad simply died of a broken heart.

While starting the process of cleaning out the family home I cam across these photos of the boat I cut my teeth on. A custom teak on mahogany built in the Kyles of Scotland. A full keel, canoe stern, blue water boat. We raced her in Lough Swilly where she was faster around the buoys than the Dragons, and we sailed her along the Atlantic north west coast of Ireland - Tory Island, Rathlin Island, Mulroy Bay etc. She was called Pladda, gaelic for small rock.

I spent many a summer on her with my friends. Unfortunately she cut her mooring during an October storm in the early 90s and was lost on the rocks of Inch Island.

Sorry to here about your parents

I lost my granddad back in October and he was the one who passed this boating sickness on to me! I was still in diapers when he was building an Ian Farrier Trailer Tri 680. He also took me to all the boat shows when I was a kid, bought me ship models to build, gave me all his naval architecture and boat building books...

But that plywood trimaran, it started my obsession with boats...we went sailing in it, fishing off of it, I camped in it in his back yard on the trailer and played on it every chance I got. I wanted it sooooo bad hen he gave it to my dad but I was 16 with no money. Eventually it went to a fellow addict who restored it.

I still have the plans and had built a 1:10 scale model of it for Radio Control. Since he passed, I've toyed with the Idea of a 1:5 scale model.

I need to scan in some old color pictures of it.

So sorry to hear about your Dad, especially the broken heart. It seems inevitable that we find ourselves going through "stuff" after a passing. Hard to avoid the reminders of things we did when they were alive.

I can't help but wonder what it's like to look back at something you enjoyed so much as that Scotty built. Isn't it amazing how the great moments weren't about the air-conditioning or top-notch electronics, but maybe about how she would moan to absorb a sudden gust or the way the cabin would smell when you opened the door on a warm sunny day. Here's hoping you journey through "stuff" fills you with awesome recollection. Thanks for sharing.

Our condolences. Time (and trawler time) is the cure. All the best to you and your family.
