Dingy or tender

When buying a 55ft trawler, is it normal for it to come without a tender / rib? We have negotiated a price for a boat thinking that the tender observed on the boat would naturally come with it only to find out it's not included in the inventory. Can't say that I'm not disappointed. If I go ahead with the purchase it'll cost me now the extra cost of buying a rib / tender / dingy.

A Walker Bay 10’ is $1500 and its bulletproof. A tube kit for it is $850 which makes it a rib. You can even buy a sail rig for it if you want that. I just had a brand new Suzuki 2.5 shipped to my house, no tax, no shipping for $650. Which means, for $2400 you can have a brand new rib & engine which will last you for years till you decide what you really want/need. I have a 24 year old Walker 8 that is still going strong. Let them keep the old one.
 
Unless it was included in the contract, the Dingy/tender is not actually part of the boat. The good news is that you can gain a tender/dingy on your own to specifically meet your mission needs. Then you will be satisfied, rather than being activated with a unit that does not work well for your needs.
 
Trawler dinghy

Our experience was to bring our own rib, a small one. That was fine whllst on a wharf in Tauranga but on a mooring in Opua somewhat hazardous getting 2 adults, 2 kids, the dog and supplies, tacking necessary in an easterly chop to avoid swamping. Next came the 12 foot tinnie... faster, roomier but unstable and dinged the wooden sides of our 55 ft trawler. Then the Zodiac, then Jo decided a centre console rib would be good to fish out of as well. Thats the keeper after 10 years, in fact all but the tinnie are still in the yard!

Dinghy

Tenders/dinghies have separate titles/registrations most places so are separate assets, not on list? = not a part of sale
 
I can tell you about a law suit in WA. The dingy was pictured on the back of the boat. It was not listed on excluded inventory listing that was part of sale agreement. Sale agreement said all inventory except excluded list. When the deal was done, the seller removed the dingy. Buyer cried foul. Ended up going to court. Court ruled dingy is a titled vessel therefore any reasonable person should have realized they were not getting the dingy since the HIN #’s were never recorded on the agreement.

The moral to the story, don’t assume dingy’s are part of the deal until the HIN# is recorded on the offer sheet.
 
Dinghy Inclusion

When you look at a house if there is a car in the garage do you assume it's included with the house? Just because it's in the picture doesn't mean it's included: just think of what else is in the pictures, other boats, maybe a house in the background. What about the art on the wall or the booze at the bar?
If the ad states the inclusion then it is, if not then it's most likely a negotiating point or not available.
If using a broker, use one that is a CPYB (Certified Professional Yacht Broker). They have more experience, (3 year minimum) most likely are full time, not some part timer looking for "extra income".

We have just viewed the boat after securing a price subject to us liking the boat. This was done as it has cost us a few thousand dollars to actually get to where the boat is located. We found a few issues but generally the boat appears nice. Only issues that I can see is,
- carvel planked timber hull and gunwales have 2pac applied. There are a few cracks in the 2pac that need to be dealt with.
- bilge area under masters cabin is apparently the only area not cleaned (scrubbed, sanded, painted) possible timber rot. Could not test this at time of inspection but if we go to stage 2 of the contract (prepurchase survey) this can be investigated. Presurvey inspection will cost approximately $4000 - 5000). This due to location of boat.
-other items that need addressing are improvements to suit us (install A/C, new stairs to fly bridge, other small items like insect screen in 24 locations, etc). It all adds up.

Nice pics. I can see the attraction to this boat. Wooden boats have their issues and maintenance to deal with. Most issues are workable.
 
Wood tender

Well we have scaled way back. This is the wood tender to our old steel houseboat. I bought a trailer for it and now starting some minor repairs and painting. This should be fun project. I must say it feels good to be down to just this little fishing boat.
