Interestingly, my Yanmar manual states 125 hrs OR 6 mos. Seems like many people like to focus one one number and not the other. I change my engine and genny oil each fall before winter layup because it's better for the engine parts to sit for 6 mos in uncontaminated oil than to change in the spring. I used to do the same with my motorcycle, regardless of hours or miles.
IMO, oil and impellers and other things are dependent on how and where you use your boat. If you live in the South and use the boat often, it's a much different scenario than the north with winter storage.
My manual also says 1000 hrs OR 4 years for the water pump impeller. That may work in a warmer climate with regular use, but with the rubber impeller sitting in a fixed position for 6 mos in cold temps, I never go more than 2 years regardless of hours.
Boating is an expensive undertaking. Preventative maintenance is cheap insurance. I'd look for other ways to cut costs than oil changes, etc.
