I think this is going to sound crazy, I have been trying to buy a reasonably priced HF SSB receiver without success While talking to a guy on the Marina today he said why not program my laptop to receive hf ssb, is this guy pulling my chain or can this be done??

As for the laptop, you'll probably need interwebs
If you have that why bother with Hf/ssb?

Do a search for Icom IC-PCR and see what come up. These are receivers that are controlled by a PC. Just make sure the unit works with your PC, drives, comm ports, etc.

Short answer is, no. You cannot just "program" you laptop to receive HF radio signals. You can buy hardware, that will connect through a USB port, which will receive those signals and play them through your computer. Search for "HF SDR" and you will get a lot of information about these kinds of receivers and how to use them.

(SDR stands for Software Defined Radio.)

Of course with a better antenna, a SSB could be used as a transmitter in an emergency.

VHF and cellphones are very short range.Think of the SSB as insurance.
