Mechanics stethoscope ?
Get a length of doweling wood or chop a length of a small broom handle and place it at various points on the engine where you think the 'knocking' is coming from and the other end lightly touching your ear, you'll identify where its coming from and proceed methodically to isolate the problem.
I've posted on here many many times about the Ford engines, if you wish to enjoy long engine life on of the things you MUST do is to keep anti-freeze in all year round(even if you live in Florida) because the anti-freeze lubricates the water pump but more importantly keeps the galleries clean and the cylinder liner seals supple. End of closed system cooling problems.
Preventive maintenance is far cheaper than remedial maintenance and a daily check is the skippers job.
I've seen people who've had their boat laid up for months arrive, pack everything on board, start the engine with no checks and head off, to me that's just asking for trouble and surprising how often you get a call to 'come and have a look'.
