Thanks for the link. It points to anodes (rather than the absence there-of) as one of the causes of the bacteria and that removal can reduce problems, although it will shorten the life of the heater.
I have had my heater turned off for some time and will re-energize to heat the water killing the bugs. I will also drain and flush the heater.
