I run alone so I'm staying with 45 until I get completely comfortable docking by myself. Once that happens I'll probably go up to 50-55.

Here is our old Hatteras side by side with a Fleming 55 of the same LOA almost to the inch. So which is the bigger boat? This illustrates why there is a lot more to size than length.

Wifey B: Here are two the same length too. Both classed unlimited, sleep similar numbers, but not boats I'd consider similar in any way. Similar comparison as your two. :)

Ones bigger than the other, isn't it? That's my point. Put a racing sailboat of the same length, heck, one 10 feet longer, into the comparison.

Here's our boat butt-to butt with a Fleming 65 10 feet longer LOA:

Pretty darn close...

Wifey B: Just a lot of elements to size. The poll was just to get a very rough idea of TF demographics but certainly not an exact science plus I'm definitely no scientist. :nonono:

It's just like the European CE classifications. Tell you something but not everything. Our 44' Riva is CE A but we're not going to cross the Atlantic in it. We'd have to have a fuel boat to fuel us 10 times on the trip. :)

I need to go back to sleep. Don't know why I woke up. :)

For me, I think the Fleming 55' is just about all I would ever want.

Still, I am very fond of my IG36.

I'm staring at a Fleming 55 right now, and boy, they don't have a single line or angle that I don't love. There's just nothing that seems out of place. I know there's no such thing as a perfect boat, but that one sure looks the part.

Back to the OP, I finally broke out the tape measure just now, and with the dinghy and the anchor tallied in, she's actually closer to 51! Crikey...

I've been telling marinas that I'm 44. So far they've all believed me, so I think I'll keep doing that.

I always take the attitude of "the boat is the length the manufacturer says." If they have an issue with that, they're welcome to measure it.

I agree with loving the lines, etc. but after paying that much, I would definitely like not having to crawl in the ER. I'm doing that now for a lot less money!

After looking at Fleming 55's in detail, we decided that they would be really great boats to be underway in, but no way we could live and cruise on on one full time. In addition to the engine room issues noted by Codger, which alone eliminated them for me, the master stateroom crammed into the bow was a non-starter for both of us as was the aft deck configuration. Plus some other medium to minor things. These are very personal types of decisions; obviously lots of people love them for their own, and personally valid, reasons.
