Pulled the prop shaft out since engine and trans were out of alignment. Getting new cutlass bearing but is there some type of bushing or sleeve around the shaft where it comes out of the hull needed? Or is the packing/shaft seal all that is required?

Most boats I see with a flat exit out of the skeg like you have are equipped with a cutless bearing housing there.

I need someone with knowledge of the main ship 400. There was no bearing there when the boat was inspected pre-purchase, due to the amount of barnacles in that metal insert it seems unlikely there ever was.

Barnacles grow very fast. I think we are looking at the cutlass bearing housing full of barnacles.

So there would be two Cutlass bearings on this shaft cuz there's another one further back toward the prop?

That looks normal to me, assuming you have a strut with a cutlass bearing that’s not in the picture

Yes there is a strut with a Cutlass bearing in half of the keel opening. Thanks

Sorry I meant aft of the keel opening there is a Cutlass bearing in a strut connected to the bottom of the hull.
