I have a 1979 34' MK I Mainship trawler with the Perkins 6.354 engine. My starter motor just went bad and the repair shop said water was getting into it and I should check the freeze plug for corrosion. Has anyone ever dealt with this? Where is the plug located?
Thanks

I don't believe there are freeze plugs above the starter on the 6.354 but the water-cooled exhaust manifold is directly above as well as the raw water line from the manifold to the exhaust elbow so I would examine those as likely sources of a leak. I was surprised by this when I went to install my block heater and the port side of the engine is more cluttered and a pain to access the freeze plugs.

If you had a bad freeze plug, you would be losing coolant and notice the level being low, but raw water wouldn't impact your coolant level.

Thank you for the quick reply. I'm no mechanic but will start looking around the places you suggested.
