    Are lighthouses still useful?

Yep. There is a bewildering array of lights at night. IMHO having an outside visual confirmation of position AND perspective is critically important for night time navigation.

    Winterization fluid

Exactly my experience also, even in Alaska with extended periods near Zero F. Water in the harbor with ice on top is just a thin layer of 28 to32F ice. The water the boat is floating in, is still much warmer than freezing. And to be changing antifreeze in engine and gen to something else to...

Don will be missed here. He was always supportive of those getting off the beaten track. Richard

    diesel heater ducting

Not sure who you talked to at "Wallas", but the DT40 and (newer, larger replacement model) are certainly good enough for a 40' boat. The DT40 kept our boat warm on the coldest days in Wrangell, AK, with periods of days near 0F and weeks below 15F. It was only during the coldest times, that I...

    Trawler Recomendations

Yep. All the advice above is pretty much spot on. You need some kind of stabilization for any off-shore traveling, though I did it for a year. If you plan on going pas the Bahamas, the you need a boat that can do far off shore.

    Plow or Bruce?

Had a 40 lb Bruce with bent shaft and actually worked very well on the east coast. Then got 55 lb Delta and that anchor dragged only once in the 8 years I had it. I stopped using any achor alarm after the first year of use of the Delta. In our last two years in Alaska, we were anchored in...

    Tornadoes

 Extremely well stated. And by the way, for those doubters, "100 year events" are based on what? That media says we are now having more frequent "100 year events" only means that the "100 year" significance was wrong in the first place. Lastly, the key question for human Related...

    Odd questions from Canada Customs

In all the border crossings I have done: 45 years in Europe, 9 years with Dauntless and 50 years US and Canada, for some reason, maybe someone far smarter than me can answer, the US-CDN border crossing has been consistently the worst (a PIA), when in reality, it should be the easiest. Maybe...

4D or 8D for starting a 6 cylinder John Deere

I did the same, a Grp 31. It worked for 7 days with never a problem on 6 cy Ford Lehman Sp135:dance:

    Where is Dauntless now?

Dauntless is in Blaine, Washington Where is Dauntless Now? That’s a question I get a lot these days. And I’m writing this to thank all those who have followed our adventures over the past 9 years, either through my blog, DauntlessatSea.com or on Trawler Forum. I learned so much thru Trawler...

    Waves at open sea

Too much detail. Simply put, you need to wait for a strong High over the area, so that the winds are light, less than 7 knots. Otherwise stay in port. There are plenty of days like that in the summer, BEFORE August. I find and use Windy for winds and don't even bother looking at wave...

Exactly. Well said in all aspects. I agree.

Diesel outboard as 'get me home' option?

I like this idea a lot and now sounds better than the diesel outboard.

    C. S. Forester Movie

Thanks Rgano for sharing your experience. While i too loved the book, (thanks Parks for starting this thread), I also found that one part of the captain doing everyting for 48+ hours a bit bizarre.

How Much Rode & Chain For New England?

I agree with this. Being in New England, it was handy to have 400' of chain, but addding 200 or 300' of rode to 200' chain works well also, as it gives you some options. Also, in deeper anchorages, I have found 2x or 3x more than sufficient.

agree with all but the last paragraph And I really liked Sea School and felt it worthwhile if you are going to leave your own backyard.

    Delivery Captain License Required?

Exactly. I'm going to help a fellow KK42 move from Calif to Seattle next month and while I have my Masters 100T, it's not required in this case.

    Single or dual fuel filters?

Exactly. Very convenient at the most in-convenient times. In addition, I feed from only one tank at a time, thus, if filter fills with whatever bad, I would switch tank source and spare racor at the same time.

    Atlantic Buddy Boat or Crew

A few things: 1. Don't change oil in mid-ocean. 2. Check Noonsite on the safety of the area off Cape Verdes islands, a lot more piracy off west Africa in in recent years. 3. Following seas and winds will benefit you greatly, as you surmise. I did get 10% better fuel mileage because of it. I did...

    Strangers getting on my boat

V:thumb:ery Well Said as usual. One of the only times I knew it happened to me, I was in the engine room, while docked in Riga, Latvia. I heard/felt people walking on the deck. Assumed it was my friends, but when they didn't say anything after some minutes, I came out of ER to see what was...

    USCG Captain's License

:thumb: I got my 100 ton Masters thru Sea School. It was a 10 day, 10 hr/day course and I thought it was well worthwhile for all the points OP mentioned. I really liked our course and instructor, though in talking to people, it was clear that the quality of instruction was about the individual...

RADAR - manual or auto tune? Chart overlay?

:thumb: A few additions: I use my radar more than most because I find myself traveling at night more than I should or in bad vsby. Being a weatherman, I was also familiar with analog weather radar and my analog Raymarine works pretty much the same, but without an azimuth adjustment. Having...

    Dauntless in Alaska videos

My wife has made a number of You Tube videos showing us fishing this past year in Alaska. This particular one is of us leaving the dock and going to our favorite halibut fishing spot. In this video we catch a small halibut and an Octopus. Needless to say, we ate Octopus for months after...
