    $ 650,000.00 Bottle of Rum

    No offense here folks but just going back and reading the original post and some a bit later will clarify a lot of this. Matusalem was the original popular rum of Cuba. The event I talked about was roughly 35 years ago not 45. In the 70’s and 80’s Cuba was shipping ( I mean in waterborne ships...

    10 Common Buyers’ mistakes during Survey

    A. 1. 11. Be very careful of self-proclaimed and promoting forum experts with little or no credentials calling themselves marine surveyor experts. Unless of course They “ spent the last 20-years as a buy-side advisor...

    $ 650,000.00 Bottle of Rum

    Listen .you honestly don’t know what you’re talking about so I’d suggest stop. You’re digging holes and stepping into them. I’m honestly starting to feel a bit sorry for you as I don’t think you really know where your going or what you’re saying. So I apprenticed and learned the business from...

    Insurance and Navigation Restrictions

    Insurance commissions by state hold the line on companies and agents. They won’t catch everything but if you report it they will look into it. Surveyors are not adjusters and must never be confused especially if per chance you end up in court. Big problem. Most surveyors don’t have repair...

    Insurance and Navigation Restrictions

    It’s true most companies involve algorithms in risk percentage calculations but don’t kid yourself. Like all big business there is room for deal making and reaching out to keep a book of business. Rick

    $ 650,000.00 Bottle of Rum

    Listen folks this was a incident that took place around 1989-90 and you can certainly juice up the facts with all kinds of theories about the rum, the buyer and sellers mind set or background or the brokers skills but as far as I’m concerned it’s all unfounded and nothing directly associated...

    $ 650,000.00 Bottle of Rum

    Damn I post an incident from a survey back on the late 80’s that is a ‘ true ‘ story and I check out the forum today and it’s turned into a big BS fairy tale “ fiction”. As expected there is one particular character, who indirectly envisions himself as the big dog dominator that is feeding and...

    $ 650,000.00 Bottle of Rum

    You’re a yacht broker and a good one. You’ve been in the business about twenty years and worked for some of the best houses West and East coast from Ardell, Alden, Northrop Johnson, Fraser, and finally East Coast Yacht Sales. Business has been way off so you need this deal in order to land a new...

    Insurance and Navigation Restrictions

    Ted I’ve always said you really don’t know your insurance company or policy until you need to file a claim. Hoping you’ll never have to but the real marine underwriters have a real claims department that operates in-house but completely separate from underwriting. There should be no actual or...

    Insurance and Navigation Restrictions

    I can tell you Chubb is on the list of real marine underwriters from commercial to pleasure. They’ve been in the business a looong time, serious company who knows marine. I’d be lying to you if I told they will try to compete with the cheap, write anything no survey players who are everywhere...

    Insurance and Navigation Restrictions

    Like almost all insurance policy terms they are based on calculated risks, statistical averages and those gurus who work in Risk Management. Averaging formulas never work with exceptions or experienced mariners no matter how long they’ve been cruising the same waters and coasts. These...

    Insurance and Navigation Restrictions

    You are paying your agent to handle this kind of thing. Make the agent earn their % and go to work for you with the company. As a rule insurance companies don’t like to deal directly with the assured and finding the right person to talk to can be difficult. But it shouldn’t be for your agent Rick

    2015 Mercury/Tohatsu 15 hp owner question...

    I’ve got a new 2022 20 hp which I’m pretty sure is the same powerhead. Anyway tiller swing tension is adjusted by a silver lever under the tiller arm post. Push to make harder pull for less I think but could be other way. Look and see if yours is equipped like this. Good luck Rick

    Cruising to Hawke Harbour, Labrador

    Ed to say I’m jealous of your ramblings on the Labrador is extremely understated. You have a nice vessel and a heart full of curiosity. Anyway I have to ask you a couple of questions here cause not sure how to access you otherwise. You made a comment saying that Hawkes Harbor was “ more...

    Don’t Get Stuck

    Damn kthoennes that is a horror story. Diving an intake to the impeller is the stuff shock movies are based on. Makes no difference how deep or how many atmospheres you were working the risks you took would have been unacceptable with any of the marine contractors I’ve worked with. Of course for...

    Don’t Get Stuck

    The last yard I worked at we had a Phillipino guy who was about 5’ 3” maybe 125 lbs and strong. He was a welder but he was always getting called into other jobs to crawl tight spaces. He was a human ferret and worth twice what they paid him. Anyway we laugh about these close calls, as you have...

    Don’t Get Stuck

    OC Diver; that’s what I’m talking about crawling arround under the work deck of lobster style hull like the Bruno. I’ve crawled my share of Bruno’s to look at tanks but I wouldn’t do it again. It’s one thing to go under for a look but you were crawling around taking care of business. I used to...

    Don’t Get Stuck

    Cafesport; that is some really good safety info not only for your situations but sure would have helped me. If I had one arm back it would have made a big difference. But crawling through a hull doesn’t offer any buoyancy so most of the time I have to pull myself forward. I’m out of the business...

    Don’t Get Stuck

    It pays to be on the smallish side and lithe if the surveyor wants to do a complete job and get into those tight spots where maintenance is almost always neglected and surprises are often found. I’m not small but not too big either but with age I’ve sustained more than my share of orthopedic...

    Cruising to Hawke Harbour, Labrador

    Nice video of a historic whaling station on the Labrador. Very few people get up to that part of the world and like you say it’s remote and rugged as is most of the Labrador. I was up there about seventeen years and at the time there were no charts or reliable sounding info. Landing our tender...

    Advice Needed Please

    If those following this thread think I’m looking for a fight or “ doubling down “ then let me say empathically that this is not the case. I’ve spent time constructing posts for this forum and most are supported by real world facts or my old files. In so doing I’ve attempted to impart some...

    Oh My God Not A Wooden Boat

    Don’t get me wrong here I love a nice fiberglass hull with a lovely sheer line, dark topsides to show off how fair she is. This one is a bit out of my price range but I was onsite during a lot of the build. Bruce King design Rick

    Advice Needed Please

    The following comment was made by a member who is well versed and has considerable experience. It’s a remark that I’ve heard for years in one form or the other that many take as gospel despite the fact that it’s pretty much false. “ Wooden boats have significantly more potential for...
