    Dip-Tube Question

Assuming a plastic tank, one of the external sensors could work for you. Although they may occasionally suffer from "clingage" that would require a 4" dia port under your vanity and some level of tank cleaning. My last read of federal regulations; there is a requirement to be able to measure...

    Nordhavn 40...lack of side decks

I think you'll find the side deck question among the more controversial boat choices, there are strong opinions for both. For our boating/cruising, we would not want to give up interior cabin room for side decks. Having said that, the next question to be answered, is what cruising grounds and...

    Spacer heater

A portable space heater can be used, but minimum temp setting and minimum wattage. This means with a Caframo 9206, it turns on around 45F at it's minimum setting of 600w. I buy a new one every 5 years. Even so, there are many marinas that don't allow them. Have had better luck with a 35...

    Prisim light

Hi Chris on SeaLink. Regarding the prism leak, where is it located? Some overheads are balsa core which requires a different repair (and discovery of where the water is getting in). Is SeaLink the previous BLUE GOOSE? Let me know with a message, and I'll add you to the Pacific Trawler...

    Avoiding log strikes

Avoiding logs RULE #1: Keep a good lookout and steer around obstacles (boats, buoys, debris, logs, etc.) 1. When logs are around, slow down. I keep a look for them and ask Admiral to do the same. If we see one, slow down (if needed). Don't need to slow down, see Rule #1. 2. Expect logs...

    Engine Parameter Logging

It's easy to go overboard on this, if you're not that interested. However, every data point is important, not only for it's own information, but how it relates to other conditions. WESTERLY - OPERATION LOG Make operating inspections every 2 hours. Log inspections every 5-10 hours, or...

    Fuel Vacuum Question

Further to Delfin's comment: "The only time you really know the filters are clogging is when rpms drop when running". With clean/new filters, run your engine under load at cruise speed, partially close off the fuel supply valve prior to the filters/vacuum gauge. Listen for rpm reduction/rough...

    Battery Question

tpbrady - Hi Tom. How are you doing with your Firefly bank/Victron inverter? Any followup conclusions? WESTERLY has 7+ years on her Firefly bank, a capacity test in January of this year indicated the bank of 6 Group 31's still has around 94%. Yes, I float full time at 13.4v. Overall...

Need help on Balmar Alt/ smart reg choice

Also, it's important to note that Balmar rates their alternators at 6000 rpm, but are capable of up to 15000 rpm. In WESTERLY's case, max engine rpm of 2675 load produces alternator rpm of around 6500.

Need help on Balmar Alt/ smart reg choice

DDW Said: "I tried a Balmar alternator (not that one) and it couldn't break even at idle - engine and field drew more than it made - and gave it up for a Delco. I sold the Balmar with 10 hours on it for half price" Interestingly, I bought a Balmar 94-210A alternator on Ebay from someone in...

    Helm pump, pumping air?

For WESTERLY when purchased in 1997, there was evidence of steering fluid overfill at the helm pump when the system was warm. First solution was to stop off the helm pump resevoir, and install a larger/remote reservoir tank. This worked fine, but didn't solve the large volume differential...

Flow meter on raw water intake, Genny

For WESTERLY's 5kw NL, a problem arose after about 5 years of ownership. Started needing to replace raw water impellers at 90 hours, then 57 hours, then 25 hours. The generator never shut down due to overheat, but was manually shut down whenever the exhaust produced a hollow sound. Problem...

    Izuzu diesel engines

The Isuzu C240 was also a good engine, and probably could have served well, around 60hp or so.

    Izuzu diesel engines

I installed an Isuzu D500 in my 40' Ed Monk Sr bridge deck sedan in 1979. 88hp marine rated, 120hp in a truck. Was a tight fit in a shallow bilge, but a very nice engine. Purchased from Klassen when they had a Ballard location.
