Type A ATF

My 1979 ZF transmission calls for type A transmission fluid. That type isn’t readily available. Is it okay just to use type F?
 
Check your nearest NAPA store and order a case if they don't stock it.
There are also universal ATF's that claim they will work for anything. Lubricants
have evolved greatly since the days when automatic transmissions were new.
 
What model ZF tranny is this?
 
It has been many years since they made type A. It was used in all the GM cars.
Than it changed to Dexron. Type F was used in all the Ford vehicles. You could call Harbor Marine in Everett Wa. Ask for the transmission rebuild shop and ask what they recommend.
