I have been puzzled by the recommended power difference for two similar boat designs. My 27' Eastern is powered with twin 150's for a total HP of 300. A recent ad for a Cutwater 28 states power is Twin 250 HP, or 500 HP total. Both boats are roughly the same LOA, and the same dry weight, 8,000 lb. What could be the reason for that much difference in power for two very similar designs?

My guess would be, one company wants to put a reasonable, useable amount of horsepower on their boats, and the other wants to appeal to the demographic that thinks too much is never enough.

May have something to do with the strength built into the motor supports.

One could be a deep vee that needs more HP, the other flatter bottom at the stern planes easier. The Eastern is built by a company with lobster boat roots. They are very flat at the stern. Don't know about the Cutwater.
