Some years ago, I was escorting a tugboat towing a fireworks barge in San Diego Bay. The tugboat skipper called us on the radio and wanted to know if we had a depth sounder on board...we did...he didn't.

That is the company I used to work for and in fact that particular tug, the Western Mariner, I made the maiden voyage on around 1985 and had my first mates job on her. Made many trips to SE on her during my time there some years ago.

I was 17 years old in Seward Alaska during the Exxon Valdez, these groundings always make me cringe. Luckily they learned a lot about containment and mitigation from that clean up debacle.

But as a result of that I landed my first job on a boat at 18 and spent the summer on a boat in Prince William Sound. Going back with my own boat has always been on my mind since.
