Hello there - we are in the process of purchasing a Hardin 42 and looking for any intel/background - I know Bill Hardin used one of the boatyards in Taiwan to build these boats.
one of the 2x4s supporting the floor has RT1452 carved into it which I am presuming to be the actual boatyard designation as well as possibly the hull number?

Anyways, survey and mechanical inspection scheduled for this week - previous survey in 2020 was very good with no items identified for attention. She is also boathouse stored so that is a bonus.

One other question - a couple of the wood trim (mahogany??) are missing - the curved ones for where the side and bottom trim merge. Any sources for replacing these, or am I on my own to purchase straight pieces, steam them and shape them?

Thanks,

Lance

Welcome aboard. Hope the survey goes well. As far as the missing trim it will have to be made locally most likely. Good luck!

I've got a 1981 Hardin 42' Europa Sedan twin screw. I know he made a bunch of them in single screw, also. I also know he made aft cabins. Not sure which boat you have or are looking at.

I've got a bunch of information on the builder and the boats. Feel free to DM me. I can send it to you.

I'm also curious about yours as there are very few trawlers as compared to sailboats like the Hardin 45.

The sailboats and both trawler models used a lot of the same interior trim and joinery. I don't know which price you are missing, but I do have some buts I removed during a remodel and just had some milled to match to make everything match. Maybe a picture?

Thanks - survey and mechanical went reasonably well. I have sourced a shop that can make the trim pieces based on the remnants I have.

How did the survey go Lance? Did you end up buying the boat?

We have purchased the boat and ate finalizing the mechanical work identified during the mechanical inspection.

Interesting - I was told that there were only 7 of the 42’s made - ours was supposedly 6 of 7 - she is a single screw which is what we prefer for the Pacific North West.

The boat’s registered name is Ocean Symphony and I believe she has been named that since pre-2004.

This is mine. Is yours a Europa or "Trunk Trawler" aft cabin?

Europa - 2 staterooms in the bow. Double sliding goor from the cockpit to the saloon.

The boat’s registered name is Ocean Symphony and I believe she has been named that since pre-2004.

Ah. Yes. I thought that boat was in CAnada. I saw the ads. It had a twin in Washington named Caroline with a single John Deere vs DD.

My galley has been heavily renovated which also changed the feel of the saloon, and my flybridge has a more extensive console and more furniahing, and has twin Perkins 6.354s, but is otherwise essentially the same boat.

Ha ha - the galley in her was also heavily renovated resulting in an enlarged saloon. Generator was removed to make room for an Espar diesel heater. Forward stateroom was also modified adding a single bunk opposite the double bunk. Second stateroom has been modified to function more as a workshop, however, we want to revamp it back to a stateroom.

We are just in the process of working on the side decks and cockpit - scraping washing, recaulking and likely in the spring refinishing - bow decks have Cetol on them and i am curious as to how slippery when wet they may get! What do you use on your teak decks (assuming u have them)?

I am religious about using Semco Teak sealant. I use gold tone.

I mean religious in the sense that I have a faith-based belief that it is best and that I put it on every 3 months like I (should) go to church every Sunday.

The PO took the teak off the front decks, but I still have it, and in good shape, along the sides and aft.

I should add that I used Liquid Rubber Deck and Dock coating in Smooth Saddle Brown on the teak insets on the flybridge. I wanted them sealed really well and coated since they are inset below the level of the deck and water can just sit on them.
