Greetings Californians! We have a 1987 Californian 42 under contract and are moving through the Survey/Sea Trial process. I have a question for anyone who has a similar Muir power-up-only windlass.

How do you loosen the clutch to drop the anchor? My surveyor and I played with it for a bit and decided it might be wise to ask.

I will have a zillion questions once I have her back in Ten Mile, TN!

Thanks!!

Welcome aboard. Good luck with the purchase.

If it`s a Muir horizontal windlass, you slide a hollow metal tube handle supplied over one of the "prongs" on the gypsy securing device and rotate it anti clockwise.

I`m unfamiliar with operating the vertical type but it may relate to the sailing type winch handle recess in the top.
Muir strongly recommend removing the pawl for the manual retrieve and storing it nearby. I once tried the manual retrieve using the handle, total PIA. These are good windlasses, not cheap, and they are serviceable.

If you go to https://muir.com.au/ and look under "Support" you should find the Manual for your windlass, it`s how I found mine.
