Has YachtWorld.com dumbed-down its search options?

Yachtworld is almost, but not quite, unless at this point. Clearly they hobbled it so you HAVE TO GO THRU A BROKER to do anything. It's a shame but the brokers pay the bills. And, after all, free enterprise most likely paid for most of these boats!

    AIS Pros & Cons?

I stand corrected. I’ve been to NYC many times but never imagined boating in such traffic. We cruise the Pacific Northwest and try to dock in daylight hours.

    AIS Pros & Cons?

Not trying to sound like a smart ass but I use neither radar nor AIS when entering or maneuvering in a harbor or marina. I look out the windows. OK I may use radar to judge distance or identify vessels from land but that’s rare. Of course I rarely pull into dock after dark.

Now I have gone and done it...

Welcome aboard. I've seen her anchored and wondered what the story was. Get to know her then head up north! BTW St. Helens Marina has some of the lowest diesel prices around. Pete

    Motorbike on a trawler

I kept a Yamaha Zuma in the cockpit of my 53 Navigator for many years of traveling the Pacific Northwest. It’s heavy but no problem for the davit. Loved it. Now I have a smaller boat - American Tug 34 - and I haul 2 foldable RAD e-bikes on the roof. They’re lighter, no gas/oil to deal with...

    A quandary . . .

I would look the buyer (or the buyers agent) straight in the eye and say "It's not safe to go out in these conditions".

    Who has/uses AIS?

Ditto. AIS can see vessels around islands, see vessels coming your way that are not in your line of sight - somethings radar can't do. It also give you the vessels names for hailing purposes. It's also handy to find friends when you are cruising, say, the Canadian Gulf Islands or any area of...

    Electronics: improvement versus bling

Hi, I agree with most of the OP's points tho I find AIS and Autorouting to be features I use on a daily basis. Funny story: I asked the Rosepoint folks about autorouting and they told me they don't provide it and would never. They felt it was dangerous and stated 'they are all about safety'...

    eBikes - thoughts?

One factor I would consider is the expected 'longevity' of the parent manufacturer. There appear to be hundreds on brands of ebikes on the market. Heck I have never heard of most of the brands mentioned in this thread! How many of them will be around in 5 years? I feel pretty comfortable...

Anyone navigate with Garmin Echomap plus?

I do everything with Navionics on an iPad. I have full traditional electronics on board...but Navionics kills 'em all in features (auto-routing, ETA calc, great charts) and Apple-inspired ease of use. Pete

    eBikes - thoughts?

We have a pair of foldable RAD Mini4s. Before purchase I did some research and could not find an ebike that was saltwater friendly. (I even got a form letter back warning me of the ill-effects of saltwater on the electronic components, connectors, etc.). So we had a couple of heavy rubberized...

    Remote AIS monitoring

Thank you. I was about to make this same post. People, a web-based service has all kinds of possible failures including delays in updating positions, vessels appearing then disappearing then reappearing (all the time in plain sight). You can buy a vhf radio with AIS receive capability for...

    Anyone using an electric scooter?

Hi, We purchased a pair of RAD Mini 4 eBikes last year and love them. They are foldable so for boating we had waterproof bags custom made for them. We'll store them on the upper deck of our American Tug 34. Though none of these ebikes are salt water approved, we'll keep a spray can of CRC...

    Video cameras

OK so I feel dumb for asking this...but in trying to adapt various cheaper cameras to a boat I found the limitation was that when pointing a camera aft, most didn't support 'flipping' the image so that it acted like a mirror. In some of the cameras mentioned above, is this feature supported?

Case in point on boat prices today

Well said Kevin I made the buy decision this past summer and probably paid 10% more than in normal times. But I am 67 and my wife and I love the boat. Life is finite. Don't let it pass you by. Pete

PC nav software showing Current Arrows

Yikes! I am an avid Navionics/iPad user and have never seen arrows like those shown in the screenshot above. My Navionics does show Currents at various random points on the chart but not at every passage. Perhaps I have something setup wrong? Appreciate any advice to get me working right. Pete

PC nav software showing Current Arrows

Hi, Below is a screen shot showing Arrows indicating Current flow thru passes. I used this feature on Nobletec 10+ years ago. I could 'play' the time forward to, for instance, see what direction and magnitude at some point in the future (ie the arrows got bigger for times of greater flow...

    My new trawler: AT34 #24

Hi, I have become the proud owner of an American Tug 34 hull#24. Amazed at how robust and complete this boat is. Cruising the Columbia until next summer then (hopefully) up north to Canada. Pete

    Anyone experienced with lifts?

I have the folding RAD Mini4 eBikes. Anticipating the purchase of a new boat, I had heavy duty bags made by my local canvas shop. The bags are waterproof and capable of being lifted by a davit. Folded up and in the bags they are still heavy and awkward. The place to store them is on the roof...

    Pacific Northwest cruising questions

I usually run up the Gulf Islands side. Sidney is a great place to provision with a Safeway and Food King, and customs is quicker than Bedwell/Poets Cove. Then run up to Nanaimo and cross to Pender Harbor. There is also a Thriftway (I believe) and a liquor store in Pender. Note these are the...

    Anyone experienced with lifts?

Hi, Soon I will take possession of a pilot house trawler. I intend on putting toys on top including RAD eBikes and kayaks. Looking at solutions to get these heavy awkward toys down to the water. The boat does not have a davit up top. Searching around I've found that there are lightweight...

    No more diesel in Oregon?

Oregon is run by idiots. It's a fact.

Are Yeti coolers worth the cost?

No. Since they came to the market others have come out with similar solutions for far less cost. We use an Igloo cooler on wheels that keeps ice for 5 days. It costs about 1/3 the cost of a similar size Yeti. Shop around. Isn't capitalism grand!
