For Sale: SOLD:Sacrifice price on 1986 Hershine 37 Sundeck Trawler

Financial circumstances force me to get as quick a sale as possible on this fine boat, so I'm pricing it accordingly at $39,900. My pre-purchase survey valued it at $55,000, and I've (of course) added upgrades: Phifertex mesh on all windows (including door windows), replacement of all batteries...

    Watching TV onboard

I bought a cellular gateway...think of it as a hotspot with an ethernet port. I plugged in my router and have full wifi access on board. This may sound like overkill, but it lets me also work from my boat. :-)

    Wallpaper vs teak veneer

I'm considering using 1/16" high-impact polystyrene sheet, perhaps rebuilding the head cabinet with a thicker sheet. I've never removed the internal frame from ports; would removing , attaching the sheet with a cutout around the port, then reattaching break the external seal for the port...

For Sale: 1986 Hershine 37 sundeck trawler

I just purchased this boat last May, but financial issues force me to sell her. I haven't assembled all the customary selling information yet, nor settled on an asking price, but it will be in the vicinity of $55-60K. Nu Venture is berthed at Grand Marina in Alameda, CA. Please PM me if you're...

Powering two DC devices from a single pair of wires?

Thanks all, the fusing makes sense. It would/will be tricky, though, as I'm in essence performing 'arthroscopic surgery' within a teak-enclosed airway. I'll examine the mini-fan that's going in to see if there's any feasible way to replace the wires to the unit completely, as they are WAY...

Powering two DC devices from a single pair of wires?

OK, despite scouring my reference books on DC wiring, I can't answer a small-but-important question: The recommendation as I understand it is that every 'endpoint' should be powered with an independent pair of wires from the buss. In my case, I'm installing a TINY fan for my Airhead vent hose...

    Propane: Mystery leak, hot solenoid

Thanks all for the input. I was wondering about the O-ring on the connector, and asked my refill garage about it when I just had it filled today. Using enough amps to make the solenoid hot really does justify turning the gas off for good measure when not in use. Thanks- aenlic

    Propane: Mystery leak, hot solenoid

My sniiffer system goes bonkers on a routine basis, and there's a distinct propane 'aroma' in the vicinity of the propane locker... but I have not been able to locate any leaks. It's not the tank, as when I leave it shut off the odor dissipates and the alarm is silent. When spraying my leak...

For Sale: Unique Delta Kayak Catamaran

I recently purchased a last-of-its-kind Cat 10.5 SOT kayak; they stopped production to focus on the performance kayaks which are their main product line. It turns out, however, that I have nowhere near the time I thought I would to enjoy it, so it's for sale. The color is 'sunset orange.' As...

    Propane cooktops: Dickinson vs Eno?

    Propane cooktops: Dickinson vs Eno?

Thanks both for the feedback. psneeld, do you find that you make use of all three burners? I was thinking of the two-burner drop-in, and possible the gimbaled two-burner for my Islander 30. Thanks- aenlic

    Propane cooktops: Dickinson vs Eno?

I've been considering replacement of the Plastimo propane range which came on my trawler with a two-burner Dickinson cooktop... then I noticed the Eno model at half the price, with slightly less powerful burners. I still like the Dickinson, but am trying to force myself to be pragmatic. Does...

    Painting molded Non-skid surfaces

Very informative post. I'm looking at putting nonskid on the 'formerly nonskid' surfaces which have been covered with either bright white paint or gelcoat. One specific area is a bit 'puffy,' feeling like a rash to the touch. Having read through all the relevant posts on this forum, I've...

    ElectroScan 'residual' pressure

Thanks, Kevin. Not being familiar with marine toilets, I'm sort of at sea (ha!) on this topic as well. What would leave the input and output hoses which used to be part of the toilet with positive pressure, any idea? Thanks- aenlic

    ElectroScan 'residual' pressure

My boat has an ElectroScan system, but the aft head toilet has been replaced with an Air Head composting toilet, which I love. I was about to tap into the 2" line to the holding tank (as identified by the PO), and found that it seems to be pressurized. I hadn't noticed that the PO had inserted...

    Tackle for trawler fishing?

I'd like to start fishing from my Hershine 37 (San Francisco bay arwa), but don't have plans to go hardcore. (Read: Simple works for me.) I've read posts about the challenges of fishing from a trawler; mine has a raised aft deck, which doesn't exactly help. (6-7 feet above waterline). I don't...

How tight for water sediment screen and filter housings?

Well, personally I feel like I just time-warped to the 21st century. ? Having running water, especially running HOT water, now feels like a luxury rather than an expectation. aenlic

    Experience with Kisei inverters?

I'm planning to install an inverter with a transfer switch; my boat already has a beefy charger, and cost is an issue, without sacrificing quality. Kisei looks like a great value with the quality I want. Does anyone have any direct experience with them, pro or con? Thanks- aenlic

How tight for water sediment screen and filter housings?

Most excellent, a variety of answers... which I'm thinking are all correct. My guess is that the Great Vaseline Taboo applied to the materials being used at the time. Perhaps some gasket/O-ring material still in use will react badly to petroleum jelly, don't know... so I'll go ahead and use the...

    Freshwater pressure?

Thanks, HopCar. The reassurance about pressure is good to hear. I do a lot of research before purchasing, and all indications were that regardless of pump design, adding an accumulator tank increases the life of the pump. Given the modest price of the Shurflo 182-200 Pre-Pressurized Accumulator...

    Freshwater pressure?

I'm waiting for final parts to arrive before completing the replacement of freshwater pump and (post-pump) filter, adding a (pre-pump) sediment screen and an accumulator tank. (All but the filter and housing are Shurflo, not very expensive but apparently very high quality.) Whilst I wait, I...

How tight for water sediment screen and filter housings?

Steve, I just re-read your note and caught the bolded warning against Vaseline... thanks. A jar of silicon grease is on its way to me; I have plenty of other projects to take up the time until it arrives. Running water (especially HOT water) will be truly appreciated by the time I have it. ;-)...

How tight for water sediment screen and filter housings?

My only concern was with omitting the teflon tape. I spoke with Shurflo tech support and my concerns are eased. The warning is only for the Shurflo swivel twist fittings and 'surplus' tape on nylon fittings. Looking forward to getting back to this later today, thanks again. aenlic
