    Reg numbers

Be careful about fonts. Most states clearly say reg numbers have to be block style. Fancy fonts could easily get you stopped by a LEO.

    Reg numbers

In VA, the numbers have to be on the forward half of the boat. Registration sticker on the same line following the numbers. I can’t say for sure, but I’m guessing most states are the same. Being in VA, registration for documented boats is optional, so no registration sticker for me.

    racor 500 series lid

Even though you can’t buy directly from Racor (you have to buy from one of their distributors), I called Racor a couple years ago, a real live receptionist actually answered the phone, switched me to customer service where one of their guys answered after 2-3 rings. Quickly gave me the...

My batteries went flat over the winter! Why?

CO2 sensors are a problem on my boat killing batteries. I have special breakers to turn them off which I do.

    Alternative to varnish

Another vote for Cetol. If I recall, I did 3 coats of the natural finish and 3 coats of the gloss coat. Very happy with the results and WAY easier to do than varnish.

    Name Change vs Renewal

Exactly what service did they provide for $70. Most service companies charge $75 for a simple renewal (you can do it yourself for $26) and generally for initial documentation, they charge at least $300 more, usually $4-500 more. Whatever fees the CG Doc office charges, expect to pay 3-4 times...

    Name Change vs Renewal

Why pay a service company hundred$ to do something you can easily do yourself. Pick up the phone, call the CG documentation office and ask how to handle a name change. They are good people to deal with and very helpful….and NEVER use a service company for simple renewal.

    engine winterization tools

If the engine is raw water cooled, I agree it is a good idea to pull the T-stat, but if the engine is fresh water cooled, no need to pull it as anti-freeze is already in the engine block.

    engine winterization tools

I made up my own 3 gallon bucket a few years back. I also have garden hose connectors on all my strainers. I use the bucket to winterize both engines, genset as well as my AC system. Easy peasy.

    Fake USCG Registration

Never hurts to bring this to the top of the page as a reminder…for simple CG documentation renewal, only deal with the real CG Doc office. They charge $26/ year for 1-5 years. The scammers all want $75 and a couple say you must renew for 5 years which is not true.

    1987 Californian 42MY Blige Pumps

Are you sure it is not working? On my Carver, I have 3. Sitting still, the aft pump would be the last one to actually pump water as it is located at the highest level due to the shape of the hull. Only time it sees water is when I start to run it up on plane and bilge water rushes back to the...

    Winterization fluid

I use the 3.99/gal Walmart stuff for my water system as it is a true RV/Marine antifreeze made to go in water system. It’s ok to use in the raw water side of an engine, but the 6.99 stuff at West Marine is different with added rust inhibitors, better for engine use on the raw water side. It is...
