I suppose another brand radar "could" work with the Axiom as an MFD but I would expect it would be an unsatisfying experience at best. Any reason you would not just use the Raymarine radar made for the axiom? FYI I have an Axiom with the Raymarine digital radar and it is pretty amazing.

I am not positive but I doubt that they would work. Call Raymarine, I have always found their support to be outstanding.

It is an interesting question.
I have mixed and matched transducers with great success. However, I started from the point of knowing that that the majors were all using the same transducer manufacturer. I assumed that they were just changing the plug to differentiate themselves. This turned out to be mostly true.
I have never attempted to mix magnetrons. Is it possible that all the majors use the same magnetron? I have my doubts but I do not know for a fact that you can’t mix and match magnetrons.

Agree on the transducers since most seem to be made by Airmar. But I think the radars are probably not compatible l

My understanding is that a magnetron is a magnetron and that all the real action happens in the MFD. this would suggest the possibility of similar data coming out of all radar domes.
Again, this is not an area that I have any expertise. I find it highly unlikely the data is compatible but again I can’t actually answer the question.

In the case of Axiom, I believe they have moved some of the processing into the radardome. For sure all analog data is converted to digital. This would make it much less likely to be compatible with a different manufacturer’s radar dome.

I do not like to mix components from different manufacturers. Because if you do and have problems what happens is one manufacturer will point fingers at the other one. With a single manufacturer when you have a problem you know exactly who to go to for a resolution. I was an engineer for a computer company and when customers would mix components and have a problem the first thing we would tell them is that it wasn’t our problem…

At least with any remotely modern radar, there's a good bit of electronic stuff in the radar unit. The feed to the MFD is typically ethernet, not a raw signal from a magnetron (and many modern radars don't use magnetrons anyway).
From everything I know, with any modern-ish radar / MFD setup there is zero inter-brand compatibility. So Raymarine MFD = Raymarine radar only.

My Quantum 2 radar is wireless so I am sure it would only work with Raymarine.
Having used Axiom and Raymarine's Quantum wireless radar, as well as having spent a fair bit of time on reverse engineering marine protocols and products to make them work with open source software, I can say that radars are among the hardest to integrate cross brand and platform. While only Raymarine can provide a definitive answer, I think the highly likely answer is it won't work.
As previously asked, also curious as to why. The usual reason for trying to do something like this is to use a radar with some non-MFD solution. If you already have an Axiom, Raymarine's Quantum radar is pretty good.

Radars are NOT interchangeable between brands. The imaging and control is all proprietary.

It was nice when I installed our Quantum 2 radar since it is wireless all I needed was power cables and no large connectors to fish up through the arch.
I think Raymarine was sold. The new company very helpful. I'm not the brightest bulb and they answered every call and waited on line while I did as told. I ended up sending the unit back twice as well as some other components they thought might be a problem. In the end it was amazing.
If you are competent, then you may not need that much support but it was very helpful having them troubleshoot the different components.
