East River NY to Long Island Sound

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Have traversed the East River numerous times,
it is rather simple. Time your approach to Hell's Gate (use your Eldrige tide book)o to arrive at or near 'slack water.
For NORTH bound, take the flood up the East River. If timed correctly you carry the flood up the East River, reaching at or about slack water. Once you pass thru the Gate you will have the ebb with you as you go east.
The reverse is opposite for going South.

Marine traffic is the obstacle. High speed ferries operate everywhere, at speed and their wakes are of no concern to them. so keep a vigilant eye ahead and astern for traffic; ferries, tugs and tows.

To add to what Joezzz said, rather than thinking about slack tide, better to think about always arriving at high tide. That way, regardless of direction, the current will be with you into and out of HG.

Not for me. It’s high tide at HG right now but max ebb doesn’t occur until 9:30 and slack before flood doesn’t occur until 1:00. Since tides and currents don’t always match up I use current tables when available.
