Plane Crash on Bridge

I believe you are right but in this case the pilots desire to avoid the water led to his death. It could have killed the family in the car he hit.

The bridge was not a viable alternative to ditching. I don’t think he wanted to land on the bridge. I think he was hoping to make to the road on the north side of the bridge. There was room for cars to get off the road north of the bridge. I think he was trying to stretch his glide because his flaps were retracted. It didn’t work.

To me a water landing was the obvious choice but I have a lot of knowledge of the area. I have driven over the bridge many times. I have run boats through the area and I have flown over the area several times.
 
Oddly enough another fixed gear Cessna made a forced landing in the same area three years ago. All four people aboard survived.
