Drilling big holes in a boat seems so wrong.

Sad thing is, a 5" hole saw was used and he needs 5.25" for the housing to fit. Oh well, the hardware store opens in the morning.....Tom is now a regular at the Hardware store.

Can`t that enlargement be gained using a rasp?

Well yeah, but the hole is 5" round and 5" deep! That's a lot of rasping in the pouring rain that is sideways because the wind is blowing 20mph!!

The "correct" windlass finally showed up. Blew our weather window to get south and working in the wind and rain sucks.

Actually I took the hole saw and tilted it and got what I needed and yes I used a rasp too.

The project is done or at least the windlass turn clockwise and counter-clockwise. When the rain stops, I will run a chain through it.

Hats off to Maxwell, other than the larger hole the 3500 just dropped in place where the old one was.

Well Tom, this is what I THINK I noticed: A) You waited until it rained to start your work. B) You're not using "Hammer Drill". C) For a cigar, a tall pour of Monkey Shoulder and a plane ticket I, out my gracious, most benevolent disposition, would have brought to you MY hammer drill. Works wonder for those type of projects -- just a thought Amigo!

Jeeezzzz, "benevolent disposition", if we were in a place other than an overgrown fishing village we could have rented a "Hammer drill" .
But no, we had to break down up here and make due with what was available.

By the way, the plane ticket and cigar are no problem. Just how tall a pour of Monkey Shoulder is another story.............

Cheers, Crusty

Obviously a misnomer, When does it ever stop raining? You do it in the rain or you will be here to claim residency and run for office!!:rofl::lol::D

Nice new windlass! I`d not figured on the hole being 5" deep as well as round, great install job.

Must be a "Crusty Chief" -- not willing to share a teed-bit of whiskey!

I know better -- I SAW the pics of the two wayward souls CLEANING FISH in the bright sunshine. Or was it photo shopped? :whistling::socool:

By the by Tom. It is clean work. I like the fact the electric cables are up and out of the way. Mine run down the Sampson Post, runs aft along a stringer to the start batteries of all things. When I bought the boat the cables were unprotected from the chain in the chain locker. I encased in schedule 40 PVC. Seems to work. What size of chain do you use, please?

I am NEVER getting out of Ketchikan ! The chain wheel is the wrong size and my chain jams in it!!! The old chain wheel was for 5/16, new wheel is for 3/8. My chain is 3/8 tripple B. So I have the new part number and it will be shipped out tomorrow gets here next week......again. I wished Maxwell would have ask me for the number stamped in the old chain wheel before I ordered it. Well at least they have it in stock. This sucks. I have asked John if they get a weather window to proceed and we will catch up.

I`m missing something. Your 3/8 chain ran fine in a 5/16 gypsy but jams in a 3/8 gypsy. BBB is a chain quality, not a size? Why would this happen? Why does 3/8 chain not fit a 3/8 gypsy? Here we have gone metric so 8mm=5/16,10mm=3/8, etc, approx.
I spent time measuring and comparing links preparing for a chain replacement,if the chains were comparable I figured I`d be ok, and I am.
I hope you make it out to join your buddies soon.

It maybe I missed something and I have 5/16 tripple B chain. I will be having a new Chain Wheel sent tommow.

So while I am here crying into my beer, I get a phone call from a friend of mine saying a speed boat went by our winter dock in Washington and blew the floation right out from under it. This is turning into a very bad day.

Damn Tom, when it rains it pours! I'm not due leave Montana for some time, or I'd offer to see if there was anything I could do to help in some way. Anyway, if there is let me know. Again, sorry for the luck Amigo.

Ok, Bad Ju Ju or whatever, I'm feeling like a 5 leaf clover around Tom.
Good thing we decided to extend happy hour tonight.

Weather sucks anyway............Might need to restock the Liquor Cabinet before long.

New chain gypsy on the way. Should be here Monday or Tuesday. The weather is really crappy. Environment Canada says Gale Warnings tonight wind 30-40kts seas 2m.

Nasty here (wind & driving rain) probably heading your way...

New chain wheel in transient be here Tuesday afternoon. As of right now weather windows for Dixon Entrance sucks. Short windows for today and tomorrow. Pairadice leaving today to catch that window. He is going to foggy bay today, then cross early tomorrow morning. ASD will catch up.

Our friends leaving Ketchikan for Foggy Bay. Seems strange to not be leaving with them.

Our friends leaving Ketchikan for Foggy Bay. Seems strange to not be leaving with them.

Fair wind and calm seas John. Lay behind the islands near Very Inlet. Don't go all the way to the end, the first island has a nook which is a good location. The South end island has 'Stinky Mud' bottom.
The far corner to the East has the bite that the fishing fleet uses if in the area and the weather dictates.
Keep us posted as you are able.

After all this summer tagging along together, there is a bond no doubt. The beer will not taste as good till you hook up once again then we will all cheer your good health..

Al-Ketchikan:flowers:

Update. Pairadice is pushing toward Prince Rupert B.C. as Foggy Bay is full and the weather is cooperating. They should be there around 10 pm. The weather turns crappy again tomorrow for the several days. We will be catching up once we get our part and a weather window.

They made it past Dixon Entrance and are behind Dunddas Island heading to Prince Rupert B.C.

So what do you do in Ketchikan while waiting on parts and the weather is crappy?
