I'm managing the estate for a good friend that recently passed away and am in need of an appraiser for his 39' Navigator. Is there independent appraisers like used for properties that appraise boats other than brokers?

Reisner, McEwen and Harris are marine surveyors and could provide an estimate. Not sure if they would be overkill for what you want. If not they could recommend someone. They are out of Bellingham.

They are called surveyors. The two main accrediting agencies are Nams and Sam’s, though just being an accredited member does not necessarily get you a good one. So due some level of due diligence. Ask for a condition and valuation survey.

Jerry Edwards and Ed Gonsorowski are two that I would recommend. PM if you'd like their contact details.

You want someone whose credentials will stand up in court, should it ever go that route and remember, the cost comes out of the estate, not your pocket.

Some names, which come up often on here are:
Matt Harris

Cale Mathers

Steve Berg

Others, who have been mentioned over the years. How many are still active, I don’t now, so I’ll leave it to you to do the digging.

So Matt Harris is now on his own?

You might want to be careful picking a random marine surveyor appraise your boat. Many don't have a clue, and just rely on the advertised price, or the selling price of the boat. We had a surveyor "appraise" our boat as part of our purchase survey, and his "appraised value" consequentially was exactly the amount the boat was advertised for in the brochure on the salon table . . .:nonono::nonono::nonono:. So we paid the money, but I rather doubt we got a legitimate "appraisal"

Oh, and the surveyor was one of the ones recommended above.
