zinc chromate follow up almost 2 years

Interesting! I tried zinc paint (industrial grade - thick) on my props and found it disappointingly ineffective. That was the "cold galvanizing" type paint. You are using zinc chromate, typically applied as primer. It appears to work quite differently because of the chromate component.

Donating a three hour sunset cruise

MYTraveler is correct about the value of your donation. It is the cost to you, not the amount paid at auction. Here is a very clear article explaining this: https://pocketsense.com/tax-deductions-donating-silent-auctions-8756946.html So it is a nice thig to do for the charity but hardly worth...

Donating a three hour sunset cruise

I would add that my friend has no understanding whatsoever of finance or taxes, and has gotten away with whatever he claims!! You might not be so lucky, but then who knows!!

Donating a three hour sunset cruise

I have a friend who has done this. The value of the cruise needs to be determined by the silent auction, not by you. You make an offering detailing what is included in your charitable gift. The auction determines the value and you take that mount as your deduction. Depending on the auction...

    Interesting boats

This boat is pretty interesting but not one I would go to sea in and absolutely one I would never trust under water!! https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56382615 I am quite concerned about how the I/O would perform underwater!!

    Fixed Spotlights

We did a fair amount of over night passages. I found the fixed spotlight was too slow to maneuver and when mounted on the pilothouse roof, even with careful positioning, would still cast light on the bow. Perhaps newer models have a tighter beam. Using the fixed light required positioning it for...

Perhaps a New Thread Topic Needed?

My post was intended to simply point out that things rapidly get out of control. As previous, I think a new thread as suggested is a very poor idea that should not be supported. I am sorry if I offended you but if so it simply makes the point that it is very easy to offend without being...

Perhaps a New Thread Topic Needed?

Given the state of the cancel culture, I would not want to get banned from TF just because I voted for Trump!!

Perhaps a New Thread Topic Needed?

Why don't you just go to Twitter - plenty of vitriol there already. There is too much internet space already wasted in abusive, mind-farting ranting. Last thing we need more of whatever your political bent, especially on TF.

Is he planning to shoot flares at Eskimos if they try to board??

    North West Passage

I would check out the story of HMS Terror before considering this trip!! And watch out for (big) polar bears!

    Interesting boats

My wife just jogged my memory!! So, all the facts remain the same, except the vessel I saw in UK was called "Auriga" which subsequently became the name of our Selene. So perhaps it is actually Auriga renamed as Migrant, or perhaps they are sister ships. Either way, very nice.

    Interesting boats

I believe I visited this vessel when it was for sale in the UK in 2004/2005. I seriously considered buying it - thank god I did not. Just the logistics of getting it to Massachusetts, coupled with taking care of all the old systems, and a dock big enough to take her were kind of daunting. Plus...

Longest nonstop passage on a powerboat?

We purchased hull 001 first production Selene 47 (1999) in 2006, so not new when we got it. We put about 2,500hr on it over the next 8 years. No unusual issues during that time. New owners have done extensive travel on the vessel since 2014 and not aware of any problems other than normal...

Longest nonstop passage on a powerboat?

As I posted earlier in this thread, we ran 7 days non-stop 1,160 nm offshore in a bee line from Lauderdale to Block. So perhaps not defined as "bluewater" but a hundred plus miles off shore for a decent portion. The Selene 47 had 900 gallons on board. We averaged 2.58mpg at 7.4kt with a 280HP...

    No-GPS Chart Plotter

Personally, I always carried the paper charts for the area I was cruising and on long runs I would periodically mark my GPS location on the paper chart. So the OP still also has this option. But unless he is considering an end-of-world scenario, the easiest and inexpensive solution to his...

    Transporting tender cross country

Regarding towing the trailer 3,000 miles or so, I think the reality is it depends totally on the trailer construction and size. My assumption (?) is that a trailer for small RIB is not going to have double axle and full size wheels, and is built more lightly than a trailer designed to carry a...

Bulbous bow - A good thing or bad?

That bulb looks kind of long from the photo. Might be an issue docking in some locations, requiring more space and/or the need to reverse in to marina slip. I would guess if it was such a great improvement, more (bigger) boats (not ships) would have started offering it or building it in as standard.

    Transporting tender cross country

I do not think many small boat trailers would make a 3,000 mile cross country on-tow road trip in one piece. Your boat might not like it much either. Does the RIB have an outboard as well? I just paid $1,400 to get a new car moved 1,000 miles in a closed trailer, so I do not necessarily think...

Longest nonstop passage on a powerboat?

We did an offshore non-stop delivery of our new (to us) 1999 Selene 47 from Ft. Lauderdale to Warren, RI in 2006. Technically, we did stop (anchored) for a few hours 2x to fix a small leak and to change an oil filter, and we anchored overnight in thick fog at Block Island before completing the...

Recreational Boating & the Green Movement

Just shows there is a lot of misinformation on the internet - who would have guessed!! You are right the figure I quoted was from an article I read but is wrong. Tesla doe state that it is less expensive to (super) charge than use gasoline, though they are clearly biased - so let's call it a wash!
