Reset MMSI on Standard Horizon GX 2200E

I've changed country of registration so I want to change the MMSI. In the settings there's an option to do this. It generates a "request code' which apparently you should be able to provide to SH and they in return should give you a password to change the MMSI. That's the theory. I've generated...

John Deere "Right to Repair" Tractors

The right to repair has been a legal requirement in the European Union since 2013. The EU is leading the way in outlawing this type of anti consumer closed shop practices. New rules requiring all manufacturers to have a common USB to C charging cable for phones, tablets etc by 2024 are a game...

To upgrade or not to upgrade ?

Thanks. I've been based in the Aegean for a number of years and it is indeed a wonderful cruising ground with so many small islands to visit. The Turkish coast is also a fantastic cruising area with wonderful scenery and so many secluded bays and anchorages. It's a few years since I've been in...

To upgrade or not to upgrade ?

I'm very interested in what you say about the radio licence. I was under the impression you could only get a UK ship's radio licence from OFCOM if your boat is British registered. Is this not so? Do you have a UK issued MMSI?

To upgrade or not to upgrade ?

@Mambo42 I'm jealous. Sounds like you have a wonderful summer planned. I don't think I'm going to make it to the Ionian this year. Our daughter is finishing high school this year and applying to universities all over Europe so no long trips before June and then probably need to spend some time...

To upgrade or not to upgrade ?

@Mambo42 - I've deleted the draft private message I had prepared asking to view your Defever 49 in the event you bought the Fleming. I've been following the thread with interest and I think you've made the only decision that makes sense. Maybe we'll run into each other somewhere around the...

License requirements to operate in the Med?

I don't want to over complicate the thread but Temporary Admission is part of EU law in relation to the import of goods into the Customs Union and it does not vary from country to country - the manner in which it is administered may vary but the law does not. Montenegro is very convenient, for...

License requirements to operate in the Med?

I wasn't aware you could get USCG registration for a boat outside the US but that's definitely the way to go. Being able to buy a VAT not paid boat is a great saving but there are catches you need to be on the look out for. For example the boat can stay for 18 continuous months but you're...

License requirements to operate in the Med?

I had another look at the opening post and it seems you are planning to buy a boat locally. This raises the question of registration or flag. This would not be a problem if you bought a Turkish flagged boat in Türkiye and you would have no difficulty taking this boat to Greece under Temporary...

License requirements to operate in the Med?

I'm in Türkiye. I'm also a regular visitor to Greece. Turkish authorities will routinely ask to see the Captain's licence - I'm not sure what the reaction would be if you didn't have one. I've never been asked in Greece. Both countries require you to have 3rd party insurance and I'm pretty...

    two engines or one

On my 34' power catamaran I only use one engine apart from manoeuvring. I get 7mph @2,200 rpm on one engine and 8mph on 2 engines at the same revs. No issue steering and auto pilot works just fine on one engine.

    Looking at a Trawler Cat

I have a FP Greenland 34. It is super economic. I generally motor on just one engine when cruising doing 7Kn @ 2,200 RPM and burning on average 3.75 litres per hour so less than 1 gph. There is huge space for a 34' boat both internally and externally. Access to the engines is via the cockpit...

Buying boat in Europe owned by Delaware registered LLC

Thanks for your input. Registering in Turkey is not an option. There are penal taxes for importing 2nd hand boats - that's the main reason for so many using the Delaware workaround. I have other options for registration without paying VAT but buying the LLC and keeping the Delaware...

Buying boat in Europe owned by Delaware registered LLC

Thank you. I'm very comfortable with the situation insofar as Turkidh laws, taxes are concerned. I'm more interested in hearing any advice regarding buying the company shares or buying the boat from the company as vendor.

Buying boat in Europe owned by Delaware registered LLC

EU VAT has not been paid. I plan to base it in Turkey with frequent trips to Greece and beyond. I'm resident in Turkey so EU VAT is not an issue when visiting the EU.

Buying boat in Europe owned by Delaware registered LLC

There are many boats around Europe flying the US flag which are registered in the state of Delaware. Most of these are owned by Delaware registered LLC'S set up specifically to hold ownership of the boat. Quite often when such a boat is sold the purchaser actually buys the LLC. As I'm sure you...

If you buy the FP powercat post a thread and some pictures. I have a Greenland 34 and hoping to trade up to something bigger in the next year or so. Best of luck with it.

Entering Canadian Waters while in transit between US ports

I'm curious about the references above to the "right of safe passage". Is this a North American concept and how does it differ from the term "right of innocent passage" as defined in the Law of the Sea (LOSC). I live on the Aegean coast of Turkey and my boat is Turkish flagged. We regularly...

    New York Boat Show

Happy New Year to all from an unseasonably cold, wet and windy Turkey. I'll be in New York from 18 January for 2 weeks staying with my son who lives in Croton On Hudson and we plan to stay in the city for a few nights while we're there. I see the New York Boat Show will be on while I'm there...

    Anchor Snubber

These are very common in the Med. Almost all marinas operate stern-to mooring with boats side-by-side and no finger jetties. Almost all boats in my local marina have them on the stern lines. They are available in a range of sizes to suit the size of boat. The laid mooring lines/bow lines are...
