    Greeting from Sydney Australia

Nico, Know the boat very well. Used to cruise with previous owners when we used Laguna Quays (north of Mackay) as a base. I would be putting the stabilisers back on if you are going to do any off shore cruising. Great boat with some great history. Cheers Benn

    Double Island Point?

The last lagoon was a long time in the making. There hadn't been a usable lagoon there for over 30 years to my knowledge. Ya never know , the next one may not take so long.

Great progress Benn. Who is doing the work? Thanks Bruce. Doug Fielding and his team at Regatta marine based at Gold Coast City Marina are the team. Doug and his 3 are are great team and he also looked after Tidahapah every year from 2013 on wards until I sold her. Great timber boat...

    I have a new boat

Progress. All new gunnel post now installed, decking down, 2 layers 18 mm ply glassed over. This has now all been bogged and ready for painting. Next will be the cap rail and then the gunnel planks. The fish hold hatch has been shortened to give some deck room in front of the wheel house. I was...

    I have a new boat

Well it's 12 months down the track and FV Flora and I are still together. After the solo trip down the coast, Mackay to Manly Harbour (Brisbane) I parked up with only one trip out. This was the "Event That Stops The Bay" a first edition a gathering of nearly 100 timber cruisers of all sizes 20...

    Flopper stoppers

I was in the work shop the other day and saw those being fabricated. Didn't realise they were for you otherwise I would have written on them. Waiting to hear how they go. My magmas on Tidahapah were good once I added bit of extra weight.

Brisbane man Tom Robinson getting ready to row his handmade boat, solo, from Chile to Australia Went to a talk by Tom the other night at the BCBC (Breakfast Creek Boat Club) He is truly an inspiring young man and also a bloody good boat builder. Completed his trade with Simon Peroz at his...

A question for timber boat owners re: grounding plates

It was a wave style sintered bronze earth/grounding plate. They were wave form to increase the surface area.

A question for timber boat owners re: grounding plates

Re the grounding plate. I always had that as it was connected to my HF radio that I still had in service. But that was the only thing that was ever connected to it.

A question for timber boat owners re: grounding plates

I have sold Tidahapah now but in the 26 years I had her the only earthing was between the outer stern tube bearing and an anode attached to the hull. About 14 years ago I had an electrical guy come on board and test for current and his recommendation was to get rid of half my existing anodes, I...

Fun and Sandbar Games in NT

I would be very worried about the crocks in that area.

    Finally ?

Yep nothing like large fuel tanks and a water maker. As I always said, you can make water but you can't make diesel. When I put the RO unit on Tidahapah about 13 years ago I cut my water tanks in 1/2 so that I could increase my wine and beer storage. Then ran the water make frequently. Much...

    Finally ?

Dave, I fueled up at that fuel dock many times in Tidahapah and never a problem, a lot of the time single handed. The biggest problem for me used to be the Fraser Is barge tied up on the northern side and that is the only side I ever used.

    Finally ?

Ralf, Yes I know Lagertha very well. I knew her previous owners Chris and Judy. My boat builder mate Doug Fielding looked after her for the last 5 years or so. A great boat. I am moored just a few pens down from her in Mackay.

    Finally ?

, Sold my larger cruiser, 50' Timber , ketch rigged unit earlier this year. Used to spend a reasonable amount of time up there whale watching and on our way north and south. Have now purchased a small (39') ex timber tassie cray boat. This is a project and yes I am a timber boat tragic. Built...

    I have a new boat

Have just completed my first haul out. Changed out all the skin fittings, have done some minor timber repairs plus an engine service. All filters changed out. Steering checked out and linkage bulked up where required. Back to Mackay next week for trials and then the voyage home. With good...

STEEL Passagemaker! Looking for 50'-60" PH with Fly

We always wondered were the two engines came from but I don't think we will ever know. It would not surprise me if China has their own source of parts for Gardner engines. If you join the Gardner Diesel Engine site on the Book of Faces you can easily find out what year your engine was built and...

STEEL Passagemaker! Looking for 50'-60" PH with Fly

Hong Kong had lots of Gardner powered busses. At one stage nearly every junk in Hong Kong and every boat on the Nile were powered by Gardners. Still the best and most reliable marine engine ever built.

STEEL Passagemaker! Looking for 50'-60" PH with Fly

I believe I have posted here on this forum, forgive me if it was my "other" forum, about the difficulty of surveying and repairing Gardner engines. While they are still probably arguably the most stout engine ever, service and parts are near impossible. I would tend to disagree with Judy on...

STEEL Passagemaker! Looking for 50'-60" PH with Fly

Have a look at Australia. A series of boats that come up now and again are the Fiddler series. They are about 55 ft Gardner powered (6LXB) a bit boxy looking but roomy, good back deck and fuel efficient. There is possibly one coming up for sale in Tasmania in the near future.
