    Wet or Dry Exhaust

I don't see the blower issue, most larger vessels have them regardless of exhaust type and smaller vessels get by without. There's about ten thousand lobster boats in Maine that get by fine without blowers. Obviously with proper ventilation.

    Seacock Grease

Spartan has specific seacock grease, more expensive but it doesn't wash out or harden. I believe you can access them through the Robinhood Marine website.

    Wet or Dry Exhaust

I've had several of both, though dry has been on commercial boats mostly. My current boat is dry with keel pipe and the reasons are all mostly stated previously, my biggest reason however is using my boat in winter. I live in Maine and until recently our harbors force over but now they freeze...

    Heavy Weather - GB42

Well I finally went back and read all of the posts on this thread, something I admit I don't always do. The thing that stands out the most to me is just how elusive the definition of rough weather is. Of course many apply the definition more to a specific vessel rather an actual sea state, and...

    Heavy Weather - GB42

In my opinion the weakest part of boats like yours is all those damn windows. Having taken out the supposedly bullet proof pilothouse windows on a much larger vessel I can attest that it's no fun. The list goes on but I'm confident you get it after all the great advice provided by others. Best...

    Heavy Weather - GB42

Lots of excellent answers here. As a former sailor you've undoubtedly encountered your share of rough conditions offshore. I have only a little experience offshore in sailboats but I fished offshore in New England and Alaska on fishing trawlers for over forty years and formerly owned an Albin...

What is the long thing attached to the hull?

Why would they? There's no fun in that.

What is the long thing attached to the hull?

I doubt very much it's a cooler of any sort. First it simply doesn't look like one and second it would be a very poor place to mount one. A cooler in that location could not be counted on to remain immersed at all times, they're most commonly mounted further aft on semi displacement hulls and...

What is the long thing attached to the hull?

We're it a cooler it would be much more efficient if it were out of contact with the fiberglass hull. I have engine keel cooling on my boat and it's a cupronickel tube running about half an inch out from the hull between thru hull fittings.

What is the long thing attached to the hull?

Certainly it could be a better design but it would work as presented. Like many V hulls a more triangular shape with a flat horizontal face to the waters surface wold be better.

    Help identify this trawler?

I saw that ad and immediately lusted for that boat but after thinking like an adult I realized that my heirs were unlikely to finish the project, I certainly never will.

What is the long thing attached to the hull?

I believe it’s a lifting strake, I’ve seen something similar on a couple of lobster boats. Keeps the bow up a little higher to keep the forefoot from digging in.

When did trawlers start being called trawlers?

A trawl was a type of net first used to catch fish and prawns on the Thames estuary in the seventeenth century which was pulled by a sailing vessel called a trawler. Of course much later steam, gas and ultimately diesel power replaced sails. The term trawler as applied to recreational vessels is...

    Late season Maine Migration advice

Commercial fished from Penobscot bay to Cape Cod all winter in a 38 ft boat for years, use your head and you won’t have a problem.

    What Would You Have Done?

You are required to make every effort to maintain control of your vessel so in this situation, assuming steering with twin engines doesn’t work an anchor is called for followed by a security call. I once lost a engine in a channel, still had steering, one engine and bow thruster and made a...

    Ditch bag recommendations?

Thank you for clarifying my point. Here in Rockport the surface water temperature is about 70F so after spending one hour soaking in it you have most likely already become hypothermic. Most of the year it’s much less than that. To someone old or health compromised death could occur in as little...

    Ditch bag recommendations?

Thinking you won’t be in the water for long enough to have serious problems or that your cell phone or credit cards are important is completely unrealistic. People die from hypothermia and drowning within easy sight of land, if you’re not in top shape or somewhere beyond young water survival is...

    Ditch bag recommendations?

Ultimately you're talking about survival, whether it's a short wait a mile from shore or something more serious far offshore. Start from the top and work down. At the top is a life raft, next survival suits and an EPIRB, without those you'll need rescue pretty quickly before the stuff in ditch...

    Engine cooling through hull question

I agree there's no need for a scoop however I also don't believe an exterior strainer is needed either. I have a Perko strainer inside and have only once had anything limit flow. All I need to do if it clogs on the outside is remove the hose to the seacock raise it above the waterline, open the...

    Prop Size

A propeller doesn't necessarily have to be pitched to obtain an engines max rpm. Depending on how you use your boat being pitched to just a bit over torque peak is usually most efficient. Just remember not to overload your engine trying to get higher rpm. A manufacturers engine graph will help...

    Used zinc annodes

While aluminum does work in saltwater I've found that it forms a layer of aluminum oxide after a short time and becomes passified. Not an issue if you can clean them off frequently. Anodes can and should be tested with an ohm meter before launching or anytime their function is in question.

How to handle one engine failing?

I had this occur many years ago and used a simple and secure way of locking the shaft. I replaced one flange bolt at the transmission end with a longer bolt, put a piece of chain on the bolt and fastened the other end of the chain to a convenient bolt on the engine.
  23. Fish53

    Used zinc annodes

Mass and surface area have a sizable affect on anode life, as does the nature of where you have your boat. In my harbor I have a 2 lb. block zinc and two shaft zincs (1.25"). After about 12 weeks the shaft zincs are almost gone and the block zinc is down to 50 percent. Obviously I put new on...

Moving a trawler to my home

At least you won't be much competition for other captains seeking work, and experience.
  25. Fish53

    Used zinc annodes

Zinc is zinc, if there's some there and exposed it'll work, how long is the question. Just remember it needs a good electrical connection to what it's supposed to protect.
