WIFI Underway What are you using?

We are using Calyx. Service is available throughout the US and Puerto Rico, and provides unlimited/unthrottled mobile internet for as long as the membership is active. 5G connectivity speeds with no geofencing like the T-Mobile plan. We have been pleased with it over the last three years using...

got a notice from canada coast guard today.

Me-Too We were traveling along North Pender in late June. Our OpenCPN nor paper charts showed a boundary area but after a call from the Canadian Coast Guard, I found the protected area on Navionics. We happened to have floated into the area as we had an engine problem. They were very polite...

    best way cell hotspot integration

We use Calyx, which is a T-mobile device using 5G. It has unlimited data and excellent bandwidth. It provides internet and roams anywhere in the US but not Canada. We also use it to make internet calls on our iPhones when there is no cell access. The cost is $65/month in the first year and...

My shiny new Insurance just got CANCELLED.

Another recommendation for Red Shield. I have a 1971 wood Monk trawler. Our agent is Fathom Insurance in Seattle. Great rates, and most other marine insurance companies would not cover us due to boat age and wood.

    Monk Mcqueen

I am married to Ed Monk's granddaughter, and we own a Monk Trawler built, in 1971. Her uncle Eddy (Ed Monk Jr.) has told us that his dad preferred to have his designs built at the McQueen shipyard as they kept the price down so more people could enjoy his plans. Jr. also says that the Vic Franck...

Vic Franck Automatic Bilge Pump and Alarm System

Thanks, everyone. The system is nice as it lets you know if a pump went off while you are away. The relays are soldered in, so it is not easy to pull them out and replace them. I like the idea of cleaning the contacts first and then if that does not work, moving the wires over to a new relay.

Vic Franck Automatic Bilge Pump and Alarm System

I have a 1971 Monk trawler built by Vic Franck. One of the bilge pumps is no longer working correctly. Specifically, it will pump in manual mode but not in automatic mode. The float works as designed, and when triggered, the light will come on to indicate that the float was activated, but the...

    Compact Vacuum Cleaner?

We recently purchased a Dyson cordless stick vacuum. We could not be happier. It is easy to take from one end of the boat to another, it has multiple attachments which are great since we have carpet and hardwood. We purchased the Dyson V10 Animal+ Cordless Stick Vacuum from Costco.

    monk 42

I have a 1971 42 monk built at Vic Franck with twin gas (Ford Seamaster 534cu in) and the state license says 32k, inscribed on the boat wood says 13 tons or 26k. I would check to see if your state license, Coast Guard documentation, or inscribed net weight are listed somewhere. when I had the...

Backing twin engine boat into slip

Lepke, Great idea, I have a WH autopilot and it has dodge buttons that I can use to quickly move the rudders and then back to center when I release the button.

Backing twin engine boat into slip

For me, I have a trawler with twin screws and no thrusters. I just think of my boat as a tank and put the engines I idle and then use my transmissions levers to maneuver like a tank. Especially backing in, this works very good. I rarely need to turn my rudders unless there is a wind and I need a...

    Litter Box

We are using disposable little boxes since we are usually not out more than a month at a time. These are great at absorbing the smell for a week with one cat. We don't scoop any poop so it may last longer if you do. When you are done it folds up to the small box size and we put it in a plastic...

    Wake pics

Our five-year old twin boys call this "Train Track Fast" since it looks like a train track behind us at 10 knots.

    Vintage Capilano Rudder Sensor

Here is a quick update. There was no cap, the hex nut is too tight to turn, probably will need some heat. I turned the flat head screw and it seems to be an adjustment as the RAT arm moved a bit. I removed the four screws holding it onto the wood and the bottom is crimped on. Next I will check...

    Vintage Capilano Rudder Sensor

Xsbank, thanks for the encouragement (as always), I am always leary of opening stuff up and then a spring pops out. Nevertheless, I think that is what I will have to do. I will send photo updates when I get back to it. Yes, the fork lines up with a modified screw on the cover to fine tune the...
