What makes a trawler yacht a trawler yacht?

Over on the ybw.com Motor Boar forum, there's a debate on what makes a trawler. Can you help

No, I can't help.

A trawler is a state of mind or a life style thing. There is not a specific type of boat that fits. Many, many types of boats can fit an individual's life style.

Others will disagree no doubt, but debate is pointless IMO.

A friend calls me a "yacht owner" when there are people around and he wants to embarrass me.

One definition of a "yacht" that I have heard is, "Women can wear heels on a yacht." Another on is "A yacht is a boat large enough to carry a boat on deck."

Really though, it's anyone's guess what that name means. Some folks say our trawlers aren't really trawlers.

i was always of the mindset that a yacht had to be minimum 40' and geared more towards the pretty lifestyle than work boatish....
also, trawler, or troller(?) leans me towards a slower, its more about the economy/journey then the arrival times.......i never really liked the concept of "fast trawler"...just seems like bridging a gap i dont care to utilize
of course, the first time i have problems up streaming a swift current or out running a storm i may feel different

As regards what makes a boat a yacht? I'd say insecurity.

What’s the goal of defining these kind of thing to others? how to define a feeling, mindset, way of life or whatever you will name it?
Important thing is that we all know what it is, whatever it is for each other, and the ones who do not know or understand and need definition are those who see it from outside and cannot understand, whatever the definition would be.

All our pleasure boats are yachts. However only the ritzy ones are called that.

TugYacht 33,
Think of “Picnic Boats” .. yacht? Yes in my book.

David,
I don’t think the lifestyle of the owner has anything at all to do w the definition of either a trawler or a yacht. Don’t see a connection. The boat stand’s alone as a trawler or not.

Tom B,
Always wondered what you looked like.

To me a yacht is crewed, the owner comes to visit and relax. Usually flying in, and rarely, but that's not part of the definition.

If the owner needs to put in any work beyond what gives them pleasure, the crew hasn't been doing their jobs properly.

It's all marketing. This is from Krogen's web site for the 42:

There’s no mistaking the rugged heritage of the Krogen 42′ trawler yacht. ......The Krogen 42′ trawler yacht was designed and constructed for yachtsmen and women who prefer timeless to trendy and solid comfort to making waves....

From their site referencing the 58: Whatever the destination, this capable trawler yachts is ready to go and is truly, at home on any sea.

The words
Trawler and Yacht used to actually mean something but that distinction has long gone by the wayside, good or bad.

Just look at the variety of VESSELS on this forum and you will see what I mean. The people have a mindset but they use different vessels to achieve their goal.

Let the flames spit.

Our boat is only a yacht if I'm wearing white pants and a navy blue blazer with gold buttons. And maybe an ascot.

"Yacht" is what your wife's divorce lawyer calls your boat in court.

I've always thought of a yacht as a power boat with a paid captain and crew, something to be seen on and a marker of your place in society. By contrast, the trawler is crewed by the owner and family with the purpose of escaping from society.

Wikipedia says yachts start at 10 meters/33 ft and splits them into several subsets from Day Cruiser up to Luxury Cruising Yacht.

Personally, I think of yachts as being luxurious (another nebulous term), having at least one stateroom, a full galley, head, etc. and at minimum coastal cruising ability.

Trawler yachts would be a subset that are full displacement and likely has traditional trawler lines, like it's workboat predecessors.

Edit: hit enter before finishing.
