There is no protection for Friends and Family transactions, so never ever use it to buy something.
    • Declines to allow viewing the item before proceeding with the transaction.

Looking in Southern California

Looking to move up from the 22' Cuddy Cabin. Used to have a Cascade 36' sloop but the Admiral is not a fan of constant heeling. Moving on from the Cuddy as the Admiral finds that she tolerates the powerboating decently well but there's no way we're both staying aboard the cuddy for a weekend.

Looking for a trawler, diesel, fiberglass hull. Needs to be 30'+.
Single Screw? Acceptable!
Needs work? Acceptable! (Don't they all?)
Wood? No thank you!
Glass over wood? No thank you!

I've finally got a mooring at America's Cup Harbor in San Diego. Been on that wait-list for over six years. So I'm basically ready to take possession fairly quickly. The boat will need at least an in water survey as well.

Already scheduled to see a mid 70's Taiwanese Sedan up in LA and two Mainship 34 MK1s. One in Oxnard and one in SD.

I'm handy with tools, epoxy, paint brushes, and bottom scrubbing. I've always been a DIY guy since I first saw what the "professionals" did with my Cascade and the rates they wanted for the their "work". Haven't had a boat sink yet! (Knock on wood)

You just missed a Willard 30 that went under contract within a few days - last asking price was $22k in Anacortes WA.

At that price point either the boat is a PoS, or you'd better act very fast. You'll need to spend the time and effort to tell the difference.

Good luck in your search, but I do have a question - cost to keep a 30-ish boat is the same whether it's $20k or $200k value. Have you considered the total cost of ownership (TCO)? Reselling a cheap boat can take a long time all the while accumulating slip and insurance costs.

Somehow I managed to keep a 36' sloop from Fall 2011 until Spring 2020 on low federal GS wages. When I sold that boat it was in better condition than when I got it. Only sold it as I had bought a fishing skiff and my focus waned on the sloop. The secret to that success was not paying anyone to work on my boat and having the boat on the mooring. The mooring allowed me spend the money on maintenance and not a slip. $142 a month for the mooring vs $500+ for a slip back then. I loved that boat for a time and sailed it all over Southern California from Santa Barbara to Ensenada.

The next boat will again be on mooring that currently sits at $157 a month. Though changes are coming in the future and costs will eventually be rising. Fortunately I have worked my way up to a "moderate" GS wage and I think I'll be ok when the rates do eventually rise.

Thanks for the heads up on the boat in Anacortes, WA. Though I couldn't imagine the costs and time to bring that down to SD. I'm not even sure I want to bring one down from Oxnard. That's two days for sure with a stop at Catalina. I can already feel my arm twisting on the thought of that!

Let me know how it works out if you are so inclined, I really like the 36 Willard, but we are still at a point where we need two staterooms.
 
The Willard broker got back to me. It already sold on Saturday. He says it was quite the project.
