So it seems like switching to fresh water toilets is the way to go ?
I'm new, but what is the difference between ( I assume sea water ) and fresh water ?
I know of the fresh water systems from RV'ing.
We are looking at a 09 DeFever that we would have to replace the toilets ( very small ), so maybe switch to fresh water at the same time.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bruce

why??

- less scale
- lower odor from seawater critters dying in bowl
- less cost if switching to an electric head

Thank you for the reply !
I ( naively ) would have thought critters would be filtered out with the sea strainers but I could see how that might not be the case.
What is a 'electric' head ? like the macerating toilets ?
Thanks

In the relative scheme of things, heads use very little water as a percentage of stored tank water for most cruisers. My guess is about 10 to 15% of your water tank goes into your holding tank.

Now if you're on a sailboat, it could be much higher percentage and worth consideration.

Sea strainers filter out the big chunks that will choke a raw water pump. Toilets have small passages that trap smaller critters. They die and stink. A horrible stink.

I removed two Raritan Crown seawater-flush toilets because of the smell. I replaced them with Raritan Sea Era freshwater-flush toilets which I've been very happy with.
If there's anyone out there who wants the Crowns, you can have them. Free.

Many of the critters are microscopic.

Pee and salt water when mixed, will form deposits within the hoses. A scaling affect that will clog the hose.

But the smell of a salt water head, just sucks!

@OCdiver

Exactly. So also if you have a smaller powerboat (with proportionally smaller water tanks) it might not be the way to go.

But yeah.... salt water head hoses. UGHHHH.

OK so replace the hoses and toilets at the same time.
Got it... This will be a job I farm out...
Thanks

Scaling effect, that's an understatement! When 1 1/2" hose becomes 99% clogged, it's a major malfunction and nightmare to fix!

Ok, I have replaced 4 VacuFlush systems in our boats. I put In Raritan Marine Elegance heads. This is the only head I would recommend. It is a macerating head so you aren’t flushing chunks down. Therefore you can use either 1” or 1.5” discharge hose. In our current boat the discharge hose is 36’ long. By using 1” hose it will hold about 1.5 gallons. With 1.5” hose it would hold about 3.4 gallons. With 1” hose there is a huge water savings when you want to flush the hose clean after pooping. I actually ran the 1” hose inside the old 1.5” hose, saved me a couple of days work and took 57 minutes. The ME head can come with a smart flush panel that lets you pick how you want it to flush, normal, short flush, add water or dry flush. This really helps to save water going into the holding tank. All of the mechanical parts are in the head not spread out in the boat. Only thing not in the head is the circuit board to control it.

If you are replacing the heads then now is the time to replace the discharge hose too. ONLY use Raritan SaniFlex hose. ONLY. It is very flexible so it is easier to work with. It also comes with a warranty against permeation, read smell. Defender sell it by the foot and had the best price last time I checked.

You can get the ME head in different configurations. They have elongated seats, tall heads, short heads, heads with slanted backs or straight backs so you can pick one that will fit. We bought a 24 volt one this time since I have the thruster bank next to the head , made it easy to get power to the head. They also have a Bluetooth option.

And you ABSOLUTELY want to go with a freshwater flush. Although the ME can come with a switchable water supply, fresh or seawater. It is more money and more complexity so I stick with just the freshwater flush.

Since it appears you aren't a poor boater given you can farm this out
Well 'poor' is relative , I know it's going to be expensive to take up boating.
But in my 60's I don't really want to be crawling around the 'basement' running hoses.

Some things are worth spending the kids inheritance on :)

Look into Raritan marine elegance heads, the current ultimate fresh water flush.
On topic: fresh water is better for odor control as well as other reasons mentioned.

Side topic: Marine Elegance toilets are nice, but I disagree that they are the ultimate. Maybe a few years ago; today there are other better choices than Raritan. I have 2 Marine Elegance toilets they flush well, the maceration is powerful, etc. they are loud and the parts / repairs are expensive. I'm replacing one next month.

Only replacing one, excellent, you can report the differences with the new product.

I've replaced 2 heads on our boat with Marine Elegance, one fresh and one sea water. We have a relatively small water tank (90 gallons) and travel to some remote places so I wanted to have 1 that didn't waste fresh water if not needed. I don't know about best in class but I've been very happy with them for several years. I'm not going looking for a replacement until I need to. Then maybe something else will be better but the tech support from Raritan is outstanding!
I guess it's a personal preference thing but I changed both heads myself along with the hoses and it really helps me understand how everything operates. As far as smell goes, I've never really noticed an awful odor unless it wasn't used in a while. If you're ever in an area with bioluminescence turn the lights off when you pee...it's amazing!

I converted my 2 heads that were Gally Maid saltwater flush to fresh pretty easily. Took a 5 gallon bucket and installed the water inlets to the heads to the bottom. Installed a standard toilet valve from Home Depot into the bottom and attached a supply line with a check valve from my freshwater system. The hardest part was making a bracket to support the bucket so there was access to the bottom and secure it so it could handle rough water. Pretty easy overall.

Agreed. Raritan also makes the Sea-Era model. Same exact functionality but in a smaller form factor that is a direct replacement for Jabsco and Raritan electric and manual flush models.

If you're concerned about water consumption, Raritan makes these models in a dual fresh/salt flush. I bought a Sea Era dual flush and never ended up installing the salt water flush option.

I replaced one Jabsco head with a Sea Era. Direct replacement except for running the fresh water line.
I then converted the second Jabsco head to fresh water using the same ( similar) components the Sea Era came with to use fresh water.
Then I glassed up all the thru hulls.

We replaced our 20YO Vacuflush toilet (and vacuum generator) and sanitation hoses today -- with Marine Elegance and Sani-flex. Really interesting that you ran new 1" hoses inside the existing 1.5" ones...I'm guessing they were not permeated? Our boat didn't stink per se...it was manageable with weekly pumpouts and Happy Campers or Noflex or Unique Marine Digest-It... but there was a funky odor at times under the floor hatches. What a pleasure to step aboard today and only get a whiff of new hoses!

Question: we have about a 10' run from the toilet to the holding tank. How many seconds of flushing will it take to clear the 1.5" line?

Really looking forward to using this new system next season!

FWIW, we clear the bowl and then at the end of trip we give it a 30 sec long flush. But we are using 1 inch hose. You probably need 1 minute min to clear 1/5 inch. If you clear each flush you are using up the fresh water and filling the holding tank much faster.
