what size packing to use?

The PO left two sizes on board, how do you know what to use? 5/16 and 3/8. 1 3/4 shaft.

If you know who made the packing gland you can probably look it up by shaft size. If you don't know who made it, try putting in the 5/16". If it's easy to do, you probably need the 3/8".

UNSCREW or loosen the packing nut and use a drill bit (back end) to check the size.

Left aboard packing , is probably the antique style that requires ongoing maint , and will drip with the bost at rest.

Look up Duramax or its competition and advance a century.

Yes it costs more , yes, its worth 10x the increased price in safety.
