Victron Orion XS 12/12-50 DC2DC Charger ERROR

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Yes..thruster is a tall order for most lifepo4...even dual purpose. Especially for something that you rarely use. If it was a very small thruster they may make sense.
I agree. That is why I'm leaning towards some inexpensive batteries that will just happen to fit in the battery boxes than I have in place.
If you were to install the 120 Ah Dual Purpose Epoch batteries, how while underway would you charge them as if I have it right (which would be odd) your internally regulated 28SI charges your existing spent AGM thruster bank, which in turn charges the new LFP house bank?

I don't think a Dual purpose battery is the right design to power a thruster.
My 24 V. windlass and thruster are powered by 6 of these which are about 6 years old, work like new although I really never run them hard for any length of time and never seem to need water. A group 24 has the same footprint as a 34, its just 1" taller.

Walmart has an AGM version of that battery that I was looking at. Another is a battery that Home Depot has. There are a few more than are definitely on the budget end of things, but frankly would probably suit my needs.

If I had better ventilation in the battery compartment, or if the space didn't also have my diesel heater, I would consider FLA. As it is, I think I need to go with ARM.

Update: I ended up ordering 3 Group 24 batteries. Vetus's battery recommendations are entirely Ah based, with no mention of CCA or MCA. For the 95kg thrusters that I have, they recommend a min and max of 165Ah and 286Ah respectively. Each of these batteries is 70Ah for a total of 210Ah for three. Each battery has a MCA of 875amps. If this isn't adequate, I'll just order three more batteries and double it.

Yeah, Ocamm. The charger is factory limited to 50A. The OP reduced it to 45A.

But yet, the 75A fuse on the output blows.

If nothing is between the victron and what else it is connected to except the fuse...

How does the 75A fuse blow with 45A on it?
Maybe you got knock-off MRBF. Very common for knock off fuses to blow below the rating

Thanks Rod, I considered that. I replaced them with fuses I ordered from the Marinehowto's Amazon page. They also blew.

I got the 2 Lifeline 8Ds off the boat today. I was able to use the crane, some snatch blocks, assorted dynema spliced loops, soft shackles and tackles to get them out of the boat and then into dock carts on the dock. High tide so it wasn't too difficult to get them up to the parking lot. However, I had to have my son-in-law come out and help me lift them into the back of my SUV.

The last time I removed batteries like this, I was able to simply lift them out of the boat and lift them into the SUV. Getting old has its disadvantages.

Today I recieved the last 2 of the 3 Group 24 batteries that I hope will replace them. 3 of them should just barely fit into of of the 8D battery boxes.

Any news on the over current issue?
Yes. As is typical of any thread I start (or hijack) they become hard to follow.

The Orion was replaced under warrantee. I sent it back to the retailer who either tested it or sent it on to Victron. The retailer sent me a new replacement which I installed last week but haven't had a chance to take the boat out to test. In the meantime I am replacing the thruster bank. I hope to get the boat out next week.

What does the historical data say? You should be able to see in your trends and history tab what happened leading up to it as well as in your shunt history if you have one.

No shunt history. My shunt is old school. At this point the Orion isn't here anymore since it was replaced under warranty.

So I finally got down to the boat to install the 3 Group 24 Everstart batteries. They are AGM "dual purpose" relatively inexpensive batteries. It ain't perfect, but it will be good enough. I was able to test it at the dock and there certainly is life again in the thrusters!

The new alternator was working great at idle, getting the new bank to 14.1v in a hurry. The Orion was working great sending 45amps to the house bank from the thruster bank. The Echo Charge quickly got the start battery up to 13.9v and was steadily climbing while the engine was running.

Now I just need to get out on the water.

Outstanding!

So today I read a post on the Victron forums that stated firmware update V1.07 was the cause of the failed DC2DC chargers. They have a new update for V1.08 that is supposed to clear the issue. I just checked mine and I had V1.06 and did the update direct to V1.08.

So I guess the issue is now fixed.

That is interesting, and a bit scary.
