Trawler Market

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

Good news. But begs the question of how you define a "trawler". They do speak to that in broad terms in the article, but I know it's an ongoing debate.

Good point. Here’s who they said they looked at.

BENETEAU GROUP; Kadey-Krogen Yachts, Inc.; Nordhavn; Selene Yachts; Helmsman Trawlers; Marlow Hunter, LLC; Alaska Motor Yachts; Nordic Tugs; Mirage Manufacturing; Beering Yatch; MAHASAGAR BOATS.; Damen Shipyards Group; SHM Shipcare.; Altena Yachting; Caledon Boatworks; Cape Dory Cruisers; Grand Banks Yachts; Krogen Express; Linssen Yachts B.V.; LINEX-BOAT OY; among other domestic and global players..

Every marina we visited during the first half of our loop adventure last year told us there were three times as many loopers this year than in years past. In many spots along the inland waterway portion of the loop, such as the Mississippi and Tennessee / Black Hawk River, the low water conditions late in the season meant very few anchorages and they were all packed full long before nightfall.

We've met plenty of loopers who plunked down two, three, four hundred thousand on a boat who planned to do the loop and sell it immediately upon completion. We met a few who had so little boating experience - and such nice boats - we wondered how they could have possibly made it as far as they had. We met people doing the loop in gleaming shiny brand new Nordhavns, KKs, OA's, GB's...

I don't know what's causing this, maybe Covid last year, maybe all the You Tube channels, or just wealthy boomers craving something different... But it's definitely driving up the price of trawlers.

Expect to resume the loop in March

Its not just boats. RV's exploded too. That one died pretty fast with gas prices, repair costs on questionable build quality, and the reality hitting of the need to just travel from one RV park to the next.

Heck, my social media accounts somehow think I'm interested in seeing pics of the seriously big people traffic jams being led on guided tours to the top of Mt Everest.

A big part, I think is pure demographics. We are in the middle of a bulge of people aged 55-65. Kids are grown and gone. Time to begin to enjoy the fruits of life, whatever one deems that to include.

But if that's it, beware there is a drought of buyers in that age bracket ahead soon, and it will be a long 10 year period before that begins to climb back again.

This is my opinion as well, but it is also accelerated by a very strong and long bull market in recent years. Those approaching retirement and saving their whole lives, suddenly see their savings double or triple in their final years of employment and end up with more disposable income than they had planned for. Makes it a lot eaiser (emotionally and financially) to throw some money at a boat and still have more money than they expected left for retirement.
