Hello all. Wondering if anyone has replaced original engine through hull on a 79 36. is it a standard hole or is it odd shaped? I could of sworn i read somewhere that the engine intake thru hull was odd shaped.

Also, i will be replacing all thru hulls or closing up unwanted ones fairly soon. Im trying to get most of the parts ready before i haul out. Does anyone know what size sea strainer i should get for the engine and the westebeke 6kw gen? Im looking at the groco ones and need to know which size i should get for each. 120 leyman for the engine which is probably most obvious.

I was thinking the 1-1/2 for the engine and 1 for the gen.

Any and all suggestions appreciated

I have a digital caliper that I use to measure things like that. Cheap and takes the guesswork out of it.

I have calipers. I was referring to the actual hole. I could of sworn i remembered reading somewhere that the hole was an odd shape,,,, tappered or something. Im just trying to plan ahead. if its a standard hole then i can just get a proper thru hole fitting and carry on. If the hole needs actual work where i have to reglass it then i can prepare a different area for the thru hole.

Also, do you have a thought or a knowledge on the size of strainer i should get for it?

Thanks

I can't think of any reason why an odd shaped hole would be done (lottsa extra work) than the usual hole saw method. Maybe the intake grate was oblong, pretty common.

Thats what im thinking. Im trying to minimize the work by planning the job out. Trying to prefab all parts to make the job go along fairly quickly.

Any thoughts on a strainer size for the engine? Also the 6kw westerbeke? Ive already switched over the fuel filters to racors and done all hoses, coolers, and oil lines, and trans lines. The only thing thats left is to install the new raw water pump which i want to do at the same time with the thru hull fittings.

Use the calipers to measure the diameter of the threads on the through hull. That will tell you the size of the hole. If it is just a normal through hull then it will be a round hole. The strainer size will be related to the through hull size. The hose may or may not be the same size as the through hull, but it usually is.

Had an Albin 40 that I pretty much rebuilt from the keel up. Replaced all my below the waterline thru hulls and reduced the number from 11 to 5 IIRC. Glassed in the other 6 holes.

Pretty sure the hoses for the Lehman are only 1 inch but I went up to 1.5 inch thru hulls as it reduced intake flow at cruise speeds to so low I never sucked up anything in over 5000 engine hours. I skipped external stainers/grates and only had internal strainers that I believe were 1.5 inch intake as well.

The Genset I believe I used 1 inch stainer as my 8kW Westerbeke pump was a bit smaller than that. My guess is your 6kW uses a similar sized pump. Reducing down to the correct hose size from the strainers should be relatively easy.

I don't think I have ever heard of an odd shaped hole on a production boat as it makes no sense as production thru hulls are all round... at least in my experience. A single report of an odd sized hole sounds like an error over the standard for Albin 36s.

May want to try the Albin Owners Group Forum.

Thank you! this is the info im looking for. Id rather have more than less when it comes to cooling. The gen im not too concerned with but the lehman id rather keep cool. The hoses do look about 1" but you thought process and going bigger on the thru hull and strainer really makes sense to me. Thank you again

The engine intake thru hull on my 1983 40 was odd shaped. It was shaped like a funnel. Larger diameter on the outside, smaller inside.
I had to lay up several layers of fiberglass to fill the hole before I could bore it straight for the new thru hull.
Like PS, I upgraded the size.
Hope this helps.
