deal of the decade...This has nothing to do with the market turning. Very thin pool of "buyers" for these things. They wanted to keep it away from the scrappers, so took an obviously lower offer from a buyer group with deep pockets.

Fuel would have been transferred to existing ferries when this came out of service...

wow, i haven't thought of those old ferry's for years. i was born in sitka and we used to ride those state ferry's all the time. sad to hear the taku was scrapped, but those old boats only live so long.
i also remember the wake they threw was horrendous. when they passed you in a narrow channel you were in for a ride. i can't believe how fast they used to run.
i wonder if they fitted them with bow bulbs to reduce the wake in their later life? i moved out in the late '70s and haven't been on an alaska state ferry since then.

My old boss bought one of those old east coast type ferries with the big flat main/car decks and elevated houses years ago.

My guess he scrapped the house and parted out the systems to recoup the initial low cost and turned the hull/deck into a large barge which I would think knowing him he turned a profit in the first hour of operation.

Different plan for a different boat, but if you have the highway of options to follow to turn a good deal into a better one...for some these are great deals and have been around since the beginning of time.
