Nice pics - thanks Charlie !

Unusual baffles . . .

Thanks Nick, it is interesting to see the differences on the same model boats. Not sure those were the most effective baffle designs.

In the same way a person could be Slightly pregnant!

Heck of a lot of sludge in there, holy cow. I had my tanks cleaned when I first bought mine, they werent too bad.
Fuel got polished and put back in. Tank guys said the steel was in great shape. Amazing for a 1978 boat!

Good photo essay. Ugh.... I am not looking forward to troubleshooting my starboard tank.(It supposedly has a leak)
Have no idea how much sludge is in the port tank but I have a feeling I wont be at ease until I get a chance to clean it out. Don't know how I am going to do that. these tanks don't have a service port. At least none that I know of.

The tank cleaning guys I used here were set up for cutting access ports and they did. I suspect many such outfits do the same as a lot of tanks apparently had none or maybe just one, usually in the wrong place.

Couldn't the moderator of these posts fix the pictures? I really don't know what I'm looking at. We need the pictures to understand, and yet it is more common than not that the pictures come in sideways or upside down.

I don't know why they download to my pictures file sideways. I made sure I only took the pics with my phone upright.

If anyone knows how to fix this I'd be happy to learn, I'll have other picure post of some other projects.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

second try at pictures.

After removing holding tank, it was in the way to even access the fuel valves, and removing the sound deadening panel and pumping the tanks, it took about 5 hours from first cut to a pile on the ground. 10 - six inch sawzall blades.

All of the steel on these tanks were really in decent shape except a little rust around the fill and where fuel was weeping through the seam on the bottom where the sludge covered the weld on the inside and where the tank sat on a six inch long piece of rubber over the stringer.

This tank really probably would have been a good candidate for repair.

The starboard tank looks way worse but I can't find any evidence of it leaking. Stay tuned for that one in the near future.

Starboard tank removal

This one took around 4 hours from first cut to in the dumpster. Much more boat yoga required on this side and had to cut in slightly smaller pieces due to water heater, throttle cable, and a/c raw water being in the way.

The things we do for fun. I’ve dropped one pant size since taking ownership.

The first pic is sideways because it was an older pic taken in portrait mode. The other pics I took with the camera in landscape, camera top left. iPhone.

Charlio, I've restored your edit function, so if you like, you could go back in there, delete that first sideways pic, go to the pic on your computer, open it is the photo app, click on auto-enhance, then save that and upload it, and according to our friend Oeanda, over on this thread... https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s22/rotating-pictures-62691.html#6
the problem should be solved. :)

Charlie - I am most impressed. My port tank awaits you !

Nick

Thanks Peter, I couldn't figure out how to delete the pic to reload another, I'm usually on the phone or tablet not my pc.

It's certainly way easier on a laptop or computer browser. Basically to delete a photo you need to hit edit, then select go advanced, then if you scroll down you'll see the photos listed as Jpegs and can delete the culprit - actually I think there will be a 'remove' button on that line you just click on, and hey presto - it's gone. :)

Thanks Nick, I am sure happy to have to part of the project done. It's supposed to be warming up this week so it should be warm enough for me to finish the fiberglassing in the bilge then I can get the new tanks mounted and plumbed.

About cutting up your port tank, not sure I am allowed back into Canada yet.;)

Did you replace the tank if so did you take any pics?

Proof of concept. They actually went in. It was actually a lot tighter squeeze to slide them in than I thought it would be. Had to move the A/C raw water pump and loosen one of the hold downs for the throttle cable. They are not mounted yet, just moved into their respective spots.
