I'm thinking of getting some shortish pedal powered boards (like the Hobie iTrek) and then mounting a cradle on the staples to carry them. The idea would be very quick into and out of the water, no wrestling down from the top. Wondering if anyone is doing that, or are there issues I've not thought of. They are about as long as the platform is wide. Would carry them low so as not to obstruct the view.

I carry an inflatable two-person kayak on the back side of my staples and have for 3 seasons cruising. I don't use a rack but I tie it securely to the top and sides of the staples just so the lower edge is above the swim step.
I was fighting lifting hard kayaks and not having any great places to store them that would not obstruct the view from my flybridge steering station until I tried the staples.
Easy to get in the water and a one person job to secure it - so far it has worked great for me.

Thanks for that experience. I am currently debating inflatable (27 lbs) vs hard (47 lbs). I think the hard ones kept on top would realistically require the crane to launch them, and while I've not had much experience with the crane I think that would realistically mean they wouldn't get used much. However on the staples, the difference in weight for a short lift might not be an issue. I worry a little about longevity of the inflatables in the PNW - pretty rocky or shell fishy.

This boat has the dinghy on top launched with a crane, I am used to stern davits I made which took 30 seconds for a launch or retrieval. The crane is looking like 15 minutes of frustration. I'm thinking the kayaks may be as good or better than the dinghy for our evening paddle around the anchorage - but only if they can be deployed quickly.

Is this the type of rack you’re talking about? I have two sets of these and they work great.

We have been carrying a tandem Hobie kayak on a rack off our staples for at least 3-4 seasons now. We love it (we are actually on our second boat with the same setup). The only thing to be concerned with is the weight hanging off the staples.

The quick access is amazing!

The other consideration, is to keep access to a boarding ladder for emergencies. On our new (to us) boat we need to install a different emergency ladder, as the kayak blocks our nice swim ladder.
