I have one of these from 2005 available that I'd like to install in my boat. When I took the cover off I saw that the 5A fuse was toast. Exactly what is this fuse for? Nothing in the manual, Sterling site, or their help desk can tell me, other than using it to change the field to positive of negative input, depending on which disconnects it's mounted.
Is it field current? I need 7.5A for my Balmar but this fuse might be for something else? Newer documentation than mine says it can be used for field currents far higher. Can I put in a larger fuse if that's what it's for?
In case you are curious, the boat had the original Yanmar alternator installed when I bought it, with a perfectly good Balmar 100 amp alternator in a locker, with a burnt Balmar external regulator, and a brand new in box sterling regulator, with said burnt out fuse. Since I've upgraded to a four GC2 house bank and a Crown Marine starting battery for the engine with a Blue Sea ACR, which would overload the Yanmar 65A alternator quickly.
