Star-Tank by Safiery tank monitor

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The star tank can penetrate through plastic tanks so no penetration apparently needed in my case with my black tank.

For fuel tanks, it has a flange with SAE 5-bolt that bolts on and then the Star Tank threads into it.
Where do you get the reading?

I get the reading either on my Simrad MFD or via the Victron app on my phone.

I am lazy. While i have the Holley sensors already I am ordering 2 Star-tanks. Easy solution and while 2x the price the fact it is Wireless and so simple to integrate offsets the $100 premium.if these work i will need 5 more!

You need to already have the victron cerbo installed, but if that is the case I can’t recommend them highly enough. Good luck.

Thanks. Yes I already have a full Victron setup. I think the Holley is a good product but you have to have a hole for it. For my fiberglass tanks: 3 water, 4 fuel and 1 waste that is a challenge. I did recently install a KUS flat type sensor connecting into the Victron Tank 140 for the waste and it works well but only a matter of time before it gets stuck.

We just ordered a unit but we do not have that Victron Cerbo thing. Is it required?

I know it integrates with the cerbo very well, but I don't know if you can receive the output in some other way. It has no wires, so you have to have a way to connect to it via bluetooth. I have not seen an app or other way to get the information, but I'm no pro either.

From their web site:

Specifications

This battery powered sensor:
  • Bluetooth Connection to Victron GX models ONLY

Mine arrives in a few days. I was hoping it also had Bluetooth. I am surprised it doesn't have any basic BT interface. Even for setup.

Sorry. I hope I didn't mislead anyone.

The set up is all done with a single button on the StarTank and the rest is done right on the Cerbo. They have instructions and video on their site.

I have not tried to interface in any other way but using the Cerbo, which pushes the information to my MFD, and out to the victron app that I can access from anywhere.

I was hoping to use my I phone to get readouts, now I'm having doubts.

I don't think this is the right one for your use case.

Jtdums,
I looked at the online manual but it didn't instruct how to change the battery. It also mentions a "2744" battery which i can't seem to locate. Can you shed some light on the battery used?
BD

I didn't look at the battery when installing either of the first two. I have one more on the way and it should be here soon so I'll take a look then.
I did note that battery life is 3-5 years so I wasn't too concerned, but certainly the replacement is something that will ultimately need to be considered.

I emailed them regarding the battery and they got back to me in less than 5 minutes.

Hi Yes
I have to change to 2477… apologies. Ill fix that tonight
Cheers

So looks like it is the common "button" watch battery that are 3v lithium.

Thanks for the follow up. Yes 2477 is good news. I've ordered mine.

Gave them a call...they said I can download the VictronConnect app on my I phone to get readings.
That is very interesting. You would think that would be promoted by them more since it apparently opens lots of users up to implementing the StarTank for monitoring. I hope it works out for you. For other sake I hope you report back your findings.

I just contacted them and told them I had neither Victron CERBO or EKRANO GX. They said I would have to have such a device to get a reading.

Hope they were able to stop the shipment and get you back your money. Sorry for the confusion.

Time to get one. They're great!

I just installed my 3rd (and final…for now) StarTank on my main poly freshwater tank. Installation was just as easy and now that I’ve done it a couple times I didn’t need to even look at the brief instructions.

Like the others it is reporting accurately. It is connected via Bluetooth through my Victron Cerbo. I believe it is now confirmed that it can only report through cerbo or ekrano devices from Victron.
Perhaps this may change in the future, but for now that is the big limitation.

I do not have, or appear to need, a Bluetooth extender plugged into my Cerbo as mentioned as a possible solution for poor connectivity. My Cerbo is mounted Starboard mid on a 36’ trawler in the engine room. Cerbo was installed as part of an electrical upgrade and took a little configuring with a bit of a learning curve. I also have a Bluetooth temp/ humidity sensor that reports through the Cerbo So I can easily access that data remotely.

My next “project” with the Cerbo is to hook up a wired high water alarm for the bilge.

Just an FYI if this helps anyone? I won't get into the finer points, it would take too long!

The Cerbo unit I think is all well and good. No monthly payments to remote in and can be displayed on a MFD. But it is limited to inputs. You need internet access and some of us are paying for that anyways.

I have Siren Marine right now at a cost of 225 a yr. Cerbo has a few more inputs vs Siren.

I found this product Remote Boat Monitoring & Control System | Blue Guard Innovations and it seams to meet my needs better. Cost is more than reasonable. Expandable in many ways vs Cebo and Siren. Cost is $5 a month but you need your own internet access. For me, I an already paying for that. So Siren is going! I did call Blue Guard to find out more. Tech support was happy to answer my questions. No MFD support, but it can display info on a phone, tablet or PC. At $60 a year vs $225, it will pay for itself in time.

Just though I would throw this out there.

Which adhesive have you used to affix these? Or were they all screw mounted?

Thanks for this thread jtdums. I’ve been convinced to get one of these to integrate with my cerbo. I have the SCAD level sensors and multiplexer ready to install, but with the locations between the holding tank and the cerbo and the wiring run needed, this seems like an easier and potentially more elegant solution. If my experience is as good as yours I’ll probably get a second then to monitor my freshwater tanks.
