Side Shift ST350 Stern Thruster?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

You can install it on the bottom of the platform if it is flat. They have different mounts available. If you don’t have a flat section then you could go to a machine shop and have one custom made.

I’m surprised you need any thruster at all with twin engines. I had twins on my 42 LRC and for about 10 years never had a problem. I didn’t had any previous large boat experience. In docking, I never touched the wheel after I made sure the rudder was straight. Just used the the forward and reverse on both controls. When you get the hang of it, there’s never a place to tight. Now I would love to have one on my single engine Prairie. Docking it makes a man looks like he never operated a boat. You must be doing a great job without a thruster after 5000 miles. I too was wondering if my Prairie had enough stern underwater to install one.
Despite claims some twin engined boats can be moved sideways by gear operation, combining bow thruster and one engine provides a sideways movement solution.
Skill levels vary, what`s easy for some is not for others.
I have twins + a bowthruster I rarely use but am glad to have.
It`s good to have more than one method of achieving a maneuver.
Dwelling on outward appearances is neither productive or helpful.

Hi
If it is physically possible to install and you can afford it, go for it. We just installed a stern thruster on our mainship 350,single screw with bow thruster and what a game changer. It will add another 10 years of boating for us young 70 year old's. We've got some boat shows coming up, probably with some good pricing. Enjoy your boat and have fun.
Cheers J.T.

Just an FYI, I just got an email from SideShift that they are having a sale on thrusters starting January 24 through February 10th. I have no financial interest in this company just a very satisfied customer.

we installed this a couple years ago, because the genset is within a couple of inched of the rudder table there was no room or access an internally mounted stern thruster. The side shifter works great

Mine looks identical to yours. (24v, which also powers my dinghy lift) Have had both bow and stern thrusters on both my single and twin engine boat.
Do you absolutely need them? No, and I rarely use them, especially with twins. But they ARE handy at times. And remote operation is nice, too.
With the wife (or GF), for tricky docking, I'd bring the boat into position, let her take over and I'd take the remote thruster with me and I'd throw the lines. If I died on the spot, she could get the boat in and the thruster would help.
Now, with small electric thrusters that most of us have, there are limits as to how much they will push against wind and current, but does add enough to put the boat in a better position, making life easier and more fun, and that's the goal.
