Hi everybody, considering using SI Leather to reupholster cushions in the salon of my GB Europa 42. Has anybody had experience with SI Leather? Thanks!

I use Ultra Leather, it is a urethane based synthetic. It’s not cheap, it doesn’t stick to human skin and it can be cleaned with solvents.

I have no experience with silicone based synthetic or it’s cost.

We had ours done this year. I tested a sample at home for durability and clean up with pen, wine, and coffee stains. I was impressed. The only picture I have handy is before the backs were finished.

Second on Ultraleather. Our Formula has it and it looks brand new at 26 years old.

I had UltraLeather Brisa in my Nordic Tug. It's GARBAGE. It lasted 8 years before wearing out in spots and along seams (see pic). I replaced it with Nauga Soft Doeskin (Naugahyde fabric backed with a polyvinyl chloride coating). Fabric strength is measured in "double-rubs". UltraLeather is 300,000 double-rubs. Nauga Soft is 1,000,000+ double-rubs (3 times stronger). Zoom in on the old pics to see the wrinkled fabric and wear. After 10 years, the Nauga Soft has held up and still looks good. In 2014, I had quotes for $4,500 for the pilot seats and settee. I did the job myself with my SailRite sewing machine. $300 in materials.

I agree that the material in your pictures has aged very poorly. I have not experienced such poor aging. In fact my experience is just the opposite. My 10 year old dinette cushions, which are used daily, still look new with no stains.

Thanks Grupet, the settee looks great. What material/fabric did you use? Thanks!

Thank you, I'll check out Nauga Soft.

what i read about double rubs is that anything over 30,000 is considered commercial heavy duty. 15,000 would be suitable for items like the family couch.
my question would be for fabrics with that high rating of 100,000 plus. is there a comfort compromise to achieve this? or a workability issue for fabricating cushion covers?

While the NaugaSoft fabric is thicker than UltraLeather, it is and remains smooth and soft. No problems sewing french seams on the Sailrite sewing machine.

I think I'm going to go with Sunbrella. Geat colors, quality product. Does anybody have any good or bad experiences they would like to share? Thanks.

Three months ago we had a sofa, love seat and chair recovered in Silicone Leather at the recommendation of the upholstery shop owner. I had Ultraleather on the boat for years but my research indicated that Silicone Leather was a better choice. It's medical grade, easy to clean and doesn't absorb liquids, etc. Prior to committing to the project I got a large sample. I sprayed sections of it with 100% bleach, acetone, rubbing alcohol and red wine. I also wrote on it with several ink pens. I then left it outside in the Florida sun for a week. There was no color change anywhere, and the inks rubbed right off. I figured that's about as much abuse as I'll ever give it. Very happy with the results so far.

On my GB32 I used Ultra Suede from Japan. Excellent material, Suede Leather feel even though it's synthetic, easy to clean with soap and water and holds very well in heat and cold, doesn't expand or wrinkle. Highly recommend it.
